Does going on strike ever make a difference?

Does going on strike ever make a difference?
I ask this question after reading about Asda supermarket staff going on strike after the company changed their contract. A lot of employees refused to sign it, and Asdas response was "if you don't sign it, you're fired". So staff went on strike.

But does going on strike really make a difference? Does it benefit the cause of those on strike? Does it encorage employers to change their policies?
