To the actual question: To kill some 'foes' does not mean to silence the voice of different opinions. Further: those who actually ARE the opponents will not even be hit.
But how can you say that for certain? Maybe just containment, pushing them back to their Island Nation, and blockading Japan until they submitted could have saved those tens of thousands of lives, vaporized in less than a second, two times! I would never want to be the one, giving that order!War is NEVER good, but limiting civilian casualties is most important, as they are innocents!
@JackSmy it is horrifying that innocent civilians were vaporized, burned and died from radiation poisoning in Nagasaki and Hiroshima (although there was a strong military base there). But read unbroken and you will see that Japan would never submit to “blockading”. The bushido culture was absolutely insane in imperial japan. We don’t know for sure but it was a carefully calculated decision to save lives in the long run. And if it wasn’t used than some other country (Russia) might have used it later not being completely aware of the horrifying effects of nuclear radiation. They would like drop a bigger bomb on someone else. Truman was in an extremely tough position to make that decision. But in a time or war with a country that attacked us first, terrorized the pacific rim, had insane fight to the death mentality and committed multiple atrocities of their own (read about the rape of Nanking). It might of been the lesser of two evils. With all that said it is still horrifying that there is enough nukes to end the entire world at any given moment. My generation seemed to forget about that.
@JackSmy glad we had a respectful debate. Seems like most people are real stupid and naive about this.
