Are pit bulls unfairly branded as "vicious" by the general public?

ComradeCarabao
Since I'm a big fan of the breed, I'll go ahead and admit my bias. I think most people who dislike pit bulls don't understand that it's the intelligence of pit bulls which allows bad owners to get them to do bad things; this is very different from a breed being naturally prone to violence. They're a very loyal breed of dog, and their intelligence allows them to suit whatever purpose an owner has for them; which can be good or bad. I think we need to punish bad dog owners, and do away with all breed-specific legislation.
