Populism usually, as a disposition and not a philosophy, proffering a mishmash of policies and programs from across the political spectrum without anything more, at most, than a thin veneer of a theoretical linkage to one another. Thus you get Senator Sanders wishing to "tax the rich" that socialism is supposed to abolish as a class. Here another irony. The more extensive the state, the more complex things that you want government to do, the more dependent upon elites you become. Thus democratic socialism will tend to empower the very groups that it theoretically seeks to oppose.Bottom line, democratic socialism is what socialism was supposed to be an conceived by Marx theoretically, but what it could not be in fact. The word "democratic" then being at best superfluous addition to the term, at worst deceptive.
