I Know the big issue is racism and cops out of control. Let see police solve crimes everyday that's doing something. Justice system convict who are you talking about cops? And what type of reform are you talking about for prisons. The? was is the media fueling hate by being bias. For me all this just made me not give a shit anymore. So i was just wondering what other thought. But thanks for random chat.
Well lets just walk down the chain. First of all is cops effective at combating crime? I would argue that we measure this by how many cases they clear, as in something gets reported, they arrive at the scene and they can close the case with possibly handing it off to the justice system for prosecution. So how many cases do they clear? 90%? 80%? 70%? In USA during 2017 (which is a good year) 61% of homicide cases was cleared. This was specifically cases that has been identified as homicide. If you find a random dead body or a missing person, that is not a homicide until you can identify it as such.Is 61% of cases cleared good? Bare in mind fewer still will be prosecuted in the justice system, this is just the number for the police.Rape. 34.5%... Rape is also the most under-reported crime in USA with only a fraction even coming to the attention of police.Robbery. 29% Burglary. 13% Also under reported since people know nothing will come out of this aside from paperwork. I could go on but I think I made my point. The current form of police in USA is not up for the task. This is not because they do not have the budget or personnel or equipment to do it but because the organization itself is flawed. Strictly speaking they are not there to help you.Lets continue in the next about the justice system.
The justice system. Laws, lawyers, judges, juries and sentencing. I do not particularly feel like going into this in fine detail. Suffice to say that its not a secret that there are different laws for different people. How often have you heard of rich people getting away with literal murder? A good example is the "affluenca teen" Ethan Couch who at 16 years old murdered 4 people by driving them over while under influence of drugs and alcohol. His legal defense included that he was too rich and privileged to understand that his actions had consequences. He was sentenced to a short stay at a mental health facility and a short stay in prison. In 3 years he was out on the streets again. Do you think any of this matters to him? He is already scheduled to court for breaking his prohibition of drugs. On the other side of the spectrum we have people who fall victim to the "war on drugs". With the smallest amount of evidence of possession sends them into jail for a similar amount as Ethan Couch or worse. There are also countless other issues with the law. You could for example use frivolous lawsuits and economically ruin people with court expenses. Trump loves to do this. The jury system is rubbish. Quality lawyers are not provided to everyone and the judges are often unfit for their duty with either biases, corruption or quite frankly lack of knowledge. The supreme court especially is known as a mostly political position and is being corrupted by every new president not to mention all the other judges they can appoint around the states.Be it the unfit judges, the flawed system for lawyers, the outdated jury system or the flawed laws themselves the entire justice system is not fit for function. Lets talk about the prison system next.
So the prison system. What is it really? A form of punishment? Rehabilitation? A free source of money? Lets just talk about what I think is the role of the prison system. I believe the prison system is there to protect society from danger and also to prevent future crime. Notice that at no point did I mention "punishment" because I think that is pointless and barbaric. Maybe the knowledge that the criminal suffers will make the victim or the victims family happy in a sick and twisted sort of way but that is wrong. The state should not be involved in such things and it does not ACTUALLY help the victims. Better to actually start a program to help them overcome the incident itself. Perhaps that is financial aid. Perhaps that is counseling. Whatever it is they need to get back to a normal life again.Where does that leave the criminal? How do we stop them from committing crimes in the future? Obviously they are a danger to society so they must be handled carefully. Does punishment stop them from doing it in the future? No, we have science that already concluded that criminals do not care about the possible consequences of their crime by the time they do it. After all what sort of criminal plans to be captured?Likewise I do not want them to escape. Does making it harder to escape work? Well not really. No matter the guards, no matter the design of the cell they always seam to manage to get out. The best way to stop them escaping just seams to be just having them not wanting to escape in the first place. Things like a games console, access to gyms, gardens, decent food, library etc.. Does not really cost much and also helps in the final step.Continued
How do you prevent future crime? They are probably not going to stay in jail forever so how do you prevent them from committing crime in the future. Obviously there are those that need mental health experts but most people just needs a stable life. Give them an education. Help them find a job and a house. Let them live a good life and they will probably not cause trouble in the future.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MauMiCL7G9YSo lets compare. I think the important metrics in a prison is how secure it makes society and stopping the people who get sent to jail from returning to jail after being released.Prison escapes in USA is getting better but that is mostly through brute-forcing the situation. Newer prisons and security systems kind of thing. Its said that around 10.5 escapes per 10,000 prisoners. Sadly I do not have the number on Norway but suffice to say there is far more escaped prisoners in USA than you would like. The important number however is the recidivism rate, the rate which people are sent back to prison. Around 77% of criminals released are sent back to prison within 5 years in USA. In Norway this number is 25%.This number is bad however that is not the most broken part about the prison system in USA, its the private prisons. They are brutal and people are literally dying in them from lack of proper facilities or outright cruelty. They also cost monstrous amount of money where they not only take all the "low risk" prisoners that do not require basically any control and are even "guaranteed" prisoners meaning if the state can't fill up their cells they still have to pay for them. Its just a fucking joke in all honesty.
I is not easy to solve crime's with no witnesses or people that won't talk to cops can't put that on cops. So i get from what you typed was cops can't do their jobs. How many cops handle these deaths? What % of law enforcement? How many homicide detectives do we have? Chicago has 922 and over 500 murders that creates a even bigger backlog cops can't solve one every couple days.
i enjoy the news shame i have to watch 10 different ones to form a opinion on something
Well if you pay them it’s a signal that you like what you are seeing. They’ll keep up the bullshit until the numbers look bad. Then heads start to roll and they change their tune and try to earn back trust (which is basically impossible in business)
no like other thing like the hero channel and sci fi and western channels and many others so it doesn't mean i like what i'm seeing on the news am i suppose to ignore whats going on in the world Internet is just as bad.
The internet has tons of good information through reputable sources but you tend to have to read it yourself rather than be force fed a bias angle a news agency wants you to believe. That said, the internet also has live streams of crap like NBC, CBSN, CNN for free and others like MSNBC with adds (which you are paying them by watching). Fox and ABC make you pay a cable bill to get their bread. Additionally financial news from Bloomberg and Cheddar News are free. There are also free international news channels like Deutsche Welle, France 24, NHK World, Sky News, RT, Al Jazeera English, TRT World, etc. Then there are smaller general run internet news like Newsy for free. Tons of local affiliates also stream the local news but not around the clock on the internet. So the internet for the most part has everything cable has, but you don’t pay a bill… But whatever. I tend to actually try to get my information from reputable sources to begin with rather than the filtered version and I don’t pay for TV. By the way there are actually free Sci-Fi and Western Channels along with many other streams of entertainment for free on the internet but whatever...
