Why is it called World War I?

Bot in terms of countries involved, death toll, and landmass fought on World War 1 is smaller than previous wars. Why doe it get that title when other wars did not get World War that encompassed more of the world? Because of this I never call it World War 1 since it seems to be a misnomer. A better name, is the name used during and immediately after it The Great War. It was also called The War to End All Wars, but that obviously didn't happen.
