Intellectual humor versus American humor?

I'm sure that everyone's aware that there's a difference between intellectual humor versus the off-color slapstick humor that Americans have come to know and love. By myself identify more as an intellectual humor, while my wife would probably identify with the average American humor. Why does it seem like so many people tend to get upset with intellectual jokes rather than the off color slapstick routine? I've also noticed that a lot of people who graduate from college with a college degree still don't quite get the intellectual sense of humor. However I've also noticed that the majority of people who do have an intellectual sense of humor usually tend to have a degree, or at the very least a moderately high IQ. Hypothetically speaking why do you think this is? I realize that there are multiple questions here, I would appreciate multiple answers, and detailed explanations with your response.
