Should migrants to be granted entry, residency and citizenship into another country by merit or just because they desire it? How would you handle it?

When you say "merit", that sounds a lot like occupancy classism which, in many places comes from the generational/family resources that a person was just born into. This rarely has to do with 'merit" but the amount of "merit" that a family could buy into via college degree or additional skilled/ vocational training or even higher education (masters/ phd). I really doubt that all a person getting an mba in hotel management works "harder" than a person scoring rooves or a person who owns their own business selling food at a stall. But according to this "merit" theory, it sounds like a cop out, easy way to get a certain class of people out.

Unless you are a refugee. I think education level, ability to gain a mentor via a career, and the potential of the candidate should be considered more than anything else. All countries should be considering what a person has to offer a country. We no longer live in a world where people should be allowed to just live off others for free

Any new place I feel should be looking to include model citizens, this I think will help to reduce prejudices, better build tolerances and respect. Look at Australia they have a criteria also you can only apply up to the age of 45.
They want people that can contribute to the welfare of the people.
It's a shame for those less fortunate but I think that is the countries duty to look after their own. I truly think this something that needs to be addressed. And also calling back their citizens. Why make it so hard.

It should be by merit only. I'd also say that people with certain skills should be prioritised for entry. I'd ban people with criminal records from entering, and you can only become a citizen if you've constantly held down a job and never broken the law.

I'd also only allow access to the NHS and benefits for those who've been here for a minimum of 10 years, held down a steady job, never broken the law and have no record of 'health tourism'.

Must not be a criminal. Must be willing to work. Those are the bare bones basics I expect. A litterbug or what-not, whatever. But no more leeches, fence-jumpers, burglars, gangbangers, murderers, rapists, drug dealers, child traffickers, etc.

It sickens me this is exactly the group that Pelosi and Harris pander to - the criminal element!

I'd say depends. in term of country crosses I feel they should be brought in and they can work towards their citizenship and if they don't they will go back when the crisis ends.

Procedures are already in place for people from other countries to come to the US and become citizens. They should be used.
