There is a big difference between

making a sacrifice and being sacrificed

we sacrifice animals all the time, for food... but they do not just walk into our kitchens on their own. We send them to the butchers to get killed, then we eat them

Many soldiers were forced to die over there, and many others went there willing to risk the risk and a lot more were really happy to be there.
