A group probably. But if there was a group like that you would never know and the illuminati would be a cover name for the public.
I believe certain powerful groups control a lot of wealth, territory and power in the world so groups like the freemason, knights of Malta, the Vatican, zionists, church of the latter day saints, skull& bones soceity, British Monarchy, communist party of China etc. Its hard to work it all out because certain groups may actually be apart or just controlled by other more powerful groups, like the freemason I believe are controlled by members of other hierarchy groups. Some say America is basically owned and controlled secretly by 5 old families like the Rothchilds, Rockerfellers, Du ponts, Goldman–Sachs, Morgan families and possibly the Bush's too though I think they are to public for that to be the case. The British Royal family is a major player, people don't realise how rich & powerful they are becauseof how low key they exercise and keep their power, the whole British state basically exists to protect and keep them in power.

There was in 1800s Germany a group called the illuminati. Then as a joke it was started via letters placed in playboy mag by people who worked for playboy.
The thinking was they followed Discordianism - a movement designed to undermine religion and get people thinking. So they tried to work out what was the stupidest most backward made up shit they could get in the magazine. I mean what kind of dumb, low expectation, backwards mother fucker would be stupid enough to believe that a 200 year old defunct German group was now in power secretly? So they published, and much to their amazement they found there were in fact a lot of dumb, low expectation, backwards mother fuckers living in America.


And thus the myth of the illuminati was borne as a joke and taken to heart by people who bear the twin afflictions of low levels of narcisism and intelligence everywhere.
