There are sensible and not so sensible ideas on both the left and the right. It does seem like a lot of people simply support or opposite things simply because they want to be the complete opposite of the opposing side.

Really the divide is between the people who argue with each other over left and right vs the people in power, the rich and the powerful. Getting the plebs to argue and fight amongst each other is easy though, and helps them to stay in control.

I defiantly think that for the majority of Americans tribalism plays a massive role in modern day politics. But there is also a massive growing divide between the right and the left on fundamental issues.
Now how much do average people even understand it... and how much is just tribalism?
Tough to say. But the tribalism is definitely stop some basic civil conversations, that need to take place in order to restore sanity to this country.

Politics is usually far from tribalism, mainly as it's the art of making people do something you need, but make them want to do it for you.

Ehhhh I definitely think that tribalism plays a pretty big role in politics, but there are some pretty fundamental disagreements that no baseline of facts can solve just by themselves. How can you argue for a $15 minimum wage when your opposition genuinely believes that taxation and redistribution is a fundamental moral wrong?

Not only that, most of these supposedly controversial topics have a very clear majority among the general population, across all political affiliations. That is when you ask people about the policies themselves without mentioning any party or ideology. It's the latter, the tribalism, that makes certain people turn away from the policies.

This is exactly why Republicans and right-wingers in general bang the "socialism" drum so much. It's a scare word. But the reality is, that most people totally agree with most "socialist" policies. They're just often not aware.

The left and right don't argue the same point. Take abortion for example. The right arguments are for the unborn baby and the left arguemets are for women. It's two completely different things and the main reason why they don't see eye to eye.
