My take on dress codes is they are fine up to a certain extent. Seemingly most of the rules are against girls, stupid ones about dress/shorts/skirt lengths that don't cater to everyone being different sizes/ developments. More extremely stupid ones about shoulders being exposed. Also there's the issue of families who can't afford the clothing that is within dress code.
- All schools should have a dress code but that does not mean they need to be repressively restrictive. Things like hair length should never be regulated by schools as an example. Political and religious slogans should be curtailed in public schools. Reasonably decent easily affordable clothing should be required. Overtly promiscuous looking styles should be restricted. Skirt/dress length on girls. Shirts being mostly buttoned up on boys. A top more than just a T-shirt. Shorts and short skirts/dresses only permitted in high heat (above 80 degrees f). Socks in shoes. Insane amounts of make-up and jewelry/piercings should be restricted. Policies should be evenly applied by gender and cultural background. A ban on hats should not apply to those required for religious beliefs. I would not go so far as saying schools should all impose uniforms but giving a limited list of styles and colors would be no problem. A lot of children are in a situation where they are trying to impress their fellow students with their sophisticated and expensive styles much to the detriment of low income students. By putting in some restrictions an environment can be achieved where all can afford to buy the clothes needed to look like they belong in the school and not be put in humiliating circumstances. A public school near me permits khaki or grey slacks or shorts for boys and similar color slacks, skirts or shorts for girls. Those are two very easy and affordable colors easily obtained at any thrift store or Walmart. Shirts are restricted to white or light blue or light grey and again you can get those colors anywhere in expensively. The shirts need to be buttoned so no t-shirts or sweat shirts though the school issues one sweat shirt with the school logo to every upper classman. Shoes can be black or white or grey or brown but no crazy colors. Socks can be white, black, tan, grey or brown or light blue which gives students a wide range of choices. Light blue and white are the school colors. Students are permitted up to two piercings per ear but only can either dangle or be a hoop. No facial tattoos permitted. Up to one necklace or pendant around the neck though they can wear as much as they want under their shirts/tops. One bracelet or arm band but no limits for medical or religious bracelets or arm bands and no limits to those rubber wrist bands if they are for charities or no profit groups etc. Rings re limited to one per finger. All this is very reasonable. It eliminates competing for things like fashion or jewelry that can cause bad feelings. This is a public high school. None of the dress code is applied by gender so boys can have earrings and wear make-up to the extent girls are and even choose to wear skirts and girls can wear boys clothing if it complies with the code. Same with jewelry. The ban on pumps applies to both. They included a ban on pumps because a girl broke her ankle climbing the grated steps to the second floor classrooms when her heal got caught in the grate.0|00|0Is this still revelant?
- Our dress code was mostly "Don't show off your privates", which seems reasonable to me.1|00|0Is this still revelant?

- Within reason. I understand not wanting anything gang affiliated or indecent in your school. You can’t have kids walking around with their ass showing but a lot of that stuff is over the top and restrictive. As long as all the essential body parts are covered up, schools should stick to teaching and not try to play fashion police.1|10|0Is this still revelant?
- To a degree kids won't have to compete with fashion when it comes to dress codes
On the other hand it takes away from them expressing themselves
So it's a really good question to put forward thanks for sharing0|00|0Is this still revelant?

340- I support dress codes, but I was one to bend and break the rules, and I have nieces and little cousins now, and also some children under my watch (when I tutor them) so it's kind of funny now, how I pay much more attention to these things because I have to. I've seen a couple of cases in which some kids do change on their "style" based on how the others are wearing, and also what they see "trending" on their socials. This was never a worry for me when I went to schools.
And of course I can tell how some of these things can be distracting and even upsetting for some of them. So this is why I understand the idea of uniforms for schools. I've seen a few kids, especially girls, a little upset because they can't afford or their parents just don't let them have whatever is trending nowadays. Anyway, it's just another one thing of the many you have to deal with when you're this involved with childrens education.1|00|0 - Yes I do.
mainly as a way to stop people being shamed when they can’t afford latest trends.
it keeps everyone ‘uniform’
can instil an element of pride in the school and yourself.
admittedly this is at odds on how I am as a person and value independence, not being a follower, being their own person.
it should however only go as far as main uniform and not gym, etc.
Now things like hair etc, don’t give a shit.
when I was at school we staged a protest to allow girls to wear trousers in winter.
girls were only allowed to wear skirts, admittedly most were as short as they could get away with.
any policy, needs to be sensible, enforceable and not just strict for sake of it.
young adults need room to grow, experience stuff etc.
(lack of sleep = ramblings lol)
oh and this stuff is not cheap1|00|0@Smashingdoozy schools without uniforms shocking lol.
As an aside, our public schools are not really general public and can cost a small fortune (tell me about it).
Our state schools are our main stream.
Even for non uniform schools their does need to some standards set, even if it’s things like no gang colours or clothing, nothing racial or inflammatory such as comments on a top etc.
There needs to be enough freedom but equally enough restraint to retain control over pupils.
It’s a hard walk for a school that has zero dress codes.
- school dress codes are mainly for the pervy old guy and ladies who will never be that young again and live through the life style of the kids. my school did nt have a dress code and things were fine and the horror stories from the kids that did have them were basically from kids with perverted teachers.1|00|0
- For public school? The dress code should be exactly the same as the general public decency laws. No more, no less. Anything that's legal to wear in public outside of school should also be allowed in school.
For private school? The dress code should be whatever the owner of that school wants. I personally think more lax dress codes are preferable, but if a private school has a strict dress code, at least I am free to go elsewhere. This is not the case with public school, unfortunately.1|00|0 - It's difficult to teach students how to be "individuals" when there's a dress code, but then again, schools don't really aim to do that ! I think school districts should set their own standards, within limits, and there should be a broad base of input for setting them.1|00|0
- Too many dress codes target women and are a patriarchal support if the misogyny that is blaming women for men's lust. Girls are not a distraction and codifying what they are or are not allowed to wear to keep them from being one is damaging to their psyches and enforces sexism1|00|0
- Yes. While it does stifle individualism, it also is a tremendous aide to poor students who can't afford nice clothes and would otherwise be bullied because of it. It also eliminates debate on what clothes are or are not acceptable to wear to school.0|00|0
- From what I've heard most schools that are going to dress codes they say it's because of gangs or limiting what brands or images on clothing in schools or whatever excuse they are using. I feel like they are trying to eliminate individuality in kids and make the kids feel like every single one are the same. No 2 people are the same not even twins.1|00|0
- I went to a school that required us to dress in uniforms. I personally liked it because it prevented a lot of hassle from having to find what it wear to school. Plus everyone was always dressed the same.1|00|0
- Nope not at all. School is forced, uniforms are forced and having to buy them yourself is forced... That's simply too much force for something. Should be like collage wear whatever you want.0|00|0
- To combat the "omg, what i'm gonna wear🙄"
Now it is going to be "huh, but i wore it yesterday😑" or "i can't, Diffany already wears that😒"0|00|0 - Only if it's provided by the school. Just like the army gives their soldiers a uniform. It's not something the students should pay for directly.0|00|0
- I support it. I always had to wear a uniform and it makes it so easy because you don't have to choose an outfit every day. School is hard enough on a lot of kids, a uniform makes everyone a little more equal I think0|00|0
- i remember seeing many a titty in high school and middle school0|00|0
- I don't approve of school dress codes. My school district tried it one year and it failed miserably. Everyone was opting out.0|00|0
- We had uniforms and it was strict which I didn't mind. I support uniforms becuase 1) it installs discipline in students and 2) everyone was seen as equals at school.0|00|0
- They stifle individuality. As long as kids are not walking around barefoot and wearing clothing with obscene lettering on it , it's all good.1|00|0
- no one wears uniform at work
as long as it is smart
why the need for parents to pay expensive clothes
which they will grow out of in a couple of months0|00|0 - Yes. Schools should follow dress code. Uniform helps in reducing comparison between Students.
Skirt length and others should be controlled too.0|00|0 - No I never liked them. So some kid wants to wear sunglasses and a crop top. If their parents allow it why should the school be responsible for stopping them?1|00|0
- No that's so boring who wants to look at a girl wearing the same outfit every single day for years?0|00|0
I think women should be able to wear what they want. And if they want to dye their hair different colors that’s fine to. But of course not Daisy Dukes that would be to much
- Yes, uniforms should be mandatory and male and female schools should be segregated like it is in Catholic schools.0|00|0
- Eugh... this brings back a weird and sort of random memory. She was kind of... she wasn’t weird but she was a wee hooligan.0|00|0
- I support school dress codes, because when you are in school you are there to learn not get laid.0|00|0
- In a way yes... I can see where it can be a benefit. Then , I can see not..0|00|0
- I support them. It's a way to equalize the visual aspect so when children make friends, they will have one less thing to differentiate.0|00|0
- No, but... I see the benefits. Poor kids have said they like dressing the same as the rich kids. But I’m for freedom of expression. Period.1|00|0
- As long as they are reasonable, I have not objection to a school dress code.1|00|0
- School dress codes are a relic of the 1950s. People should be permitted to wear whatever the hell they want to wear.1|00|0
- Yes because dress codes make all children equal so that they dont fight on rich poor0|00|0
- Yes so students can't wear weird clothes in school.
You can't wear anything in school..1|00|0 - Nope. No freedom to express ones self.0|00|0
- I had to wear a uniform so didn't have a choice0|00|0
- Yes, it's education not a fashion parade,0|00|0
- No, it is another form of socialism0|00|0
- Anonymous3 dyes becuz girls will dress like hookers if allowed0|00|0
