It'd feel odd if they couldn't detect if earth was life bearing from decently far awar, since you can do astronomical spectroscopy (use the light when a planet passes infront of it's star and measure the change in spectrums and that'll give you an idea of what the atmospheric composition is, for example methane and oxygen are pretty hard to explain when present in a decent amount in atmosphere without the presence of life).
