I'll also add I had major depression for fourteen years (from age 17 to 31), and was even suicidal at age 21. I've never once gotten high or drunk. Being depressed makes you mentally weaker, but not dumber. I knew drugs and alcohol wasn't going to make anything better. I saw medical professionals, went through the whole alphabet of medications, and at my lowest and angriest would knuckle-punch walls. But I never became an addict. I always knew that would only make things worse.
