In the 1930's it became "secondary" once cars were popularized and made global so it shifted from a male privilege to a "women's sport" because it was no longer top tier transportation. Some of this sexism still exists today and so horses are seen as "girly" and such on.
I think it might have something to do with having a powerful and muscular beast between their legs.
