What's Your Opinion? Sign Up Now!Well said. Im raising nerds for sure because thats how their college will be paid for. I used to love to write so thats why poetry will be big in our household as a way to express themselves. Sports is more so something for them to stay in shape or fall back on if theyre not the brightest in the bunch. However baseball and volleyball is pretty much their only options. Dance is another way of staying fit but also being creative. So thats why i said all of that. Im not crazy about Scrabble but other board games will come in handy... uno and other card games for sure since we’re going to the casino soon as they hit 21 🤣
No I've always found basketball boring... and football is dangerous. I know baseball can cause concussions but football has even more dangers. After my childhood friend got paralyzed at 16 from football, i was completely done with the sport.
I wouldn't push the issue either since im looking to raise nerds. But i see sports as a backup option to help then get scholarjips for college
The things they absolutely will learn whether they wish to or not is proper weapons handling/maintenance/safety, martial arts and at least 2 years of some kind of military program (Young Marines, JROTC, etc) because kids need to learn discipline, structure and how to protect themselves. Anything else I will expose them to but they have the choice of whether or not they wish to continue. The reason I emphasize 2 years of a military program is in case they ever want to join the military so they can at least have a small boost in rank going in vs. starting as an E1. That type of program also looks real good on a college/job application because it shows discipline.
Well at least your first paragraph was good. Yea i dont believe in half the stuff you just mentioned in this second pragraph. I’ll leave it at that but my kids won't be partaking in gun training or military
To each their own. However, the way I see it, it is better they know all their options vs being too restricted just because of a parent's personal belief, such as the weapons and military. Telling a kid what they won't do as an adult is just asking for resentment and issues. Kids are more likely to make the right choices if they know why the wrong choices are wrong AND that it is truly wrong and not a political opinion of the parent. For example, you say your kids will not join the military. That is their choice. If they choose it and you did not help them know what they are signing up for (again in reality, not political opinion) they can mess their life up. That was my mom's mistake with me. She was so adamant that I not join the military (even though she was in it) that, instead of letting me have a small dose of what it is like, she refused to discuss it with me at all. Had she had the discussion with me, I would have been better prepared. I pray my kids never actually join the military, but I realize that will be their choice so they best know what they are getting into. As for guns, they need to know that people, not guns, are what make them destructive. If they know how a gun works, they can decide their views about them later. I will NEVER push my political views on my kids, but I WILL make sure they know reality from fear and propaganda.
Its gonna be my choice for as long as they are under 18 and under my roof. When they move out at 18+ then they can do what they want
Omg i mentioned baseball above as well! I loved batting but hate pitching. When i practice with them, someone else is gonna have to pitch to us 🤣
Lol that's funny... I did a little bit of pitching also, but I normally played 3rd. Chipper Jones was my inspiration there.
Nice! Batting and running was the only part of the sport i liked lol. I was always afraid of getting hit by the ball
Or a historian, I would really enjoy that. Be one of those annoying parents that keep turning up at this work lol
Lmao showing yo at his job 🤣next level helicopter parent. But whys it called false choice?
Because it is a kind of manipulation, if I didn't give him the choice he might have chosen something different. I mean "false" in a loving sense lol I'd be sneaky about it, buying him pillows in the shape of boxing gloves, pictures of Muhannad Ali on the wall lol then tell him he can be whatever he decides lol
I second all you said here.
Martial arts is great!
Knowing how to swim can literally save your life.
And basic wilderness survival is almost a lost art today.
@Eagle_93 yah, unfortunately wilderness survival is something regulated to scouts. But all of those could save your life.
That survival one is quite smart. But their dad will have to teach em that one cause im not outdoorsy 🤣
Yea but i said sports because that can actually get them a scholarship into college even if theyre benched all season.
There’s other ways to get scholarships. I haven’t played a sport since like middle school, but I still have almost a full scholarship for college. As long as my kid is happy, healthy, and kind to others I don’t really care what the hell they do.
I got scholarships due to graduating top of class. Aside from sports, scholarships usually come from volunteer work (something i wouldn't make them waste their time on) or having connections (something i dont have) so yea in my household the rukes will be either be a dang nerd and work your ass off or play a sport
YEA THose would come in handy when dealing with HS bullies but im not into wrestling/boxing so my kids won't be doing those. Karate for a year maybe
I would say that Karate is a little complex and takes a long time to settle into kids, i would recommend boxing, because its simple and the training is very basic. HS bullies won't even see what hit them.
Then go for Gloved karate, In those matches, face or head shots are not allowed. And they get head gears and gloves, so the impact on the body is also low.
Hockey does get aggressive, and it's mainly to draw crowds in. The love of the game isn't about body checking, there's just such camaraderie in the sport to me, and perhaps it's also Canadian pride speaking haha
Sounds good. See we need more men who will let the woman run it 😂 i like that u can say that and not feel emasculated. Too many GAGers think it makes you submissive
LOL.. Well, the thing is the wife usually rules the home life anyways.. Women naturally like to take over certain things, she most likely will.. As long as she ain't tryna rule over me.. 😂..
Lol whatever opinion i answer of yours, i thought it was to this question. Lol now i need to go back and double check
Im not really outdoorsy but i just mentioned sports because its a backup plan for college scholarships
Don't expect scholarships with that, those are rare (and usually results in life long injuries and damage for the kid).
Well its not rare here. I said it because for years and years a lot of people i know either got a scholarship from academics or from sports. I’d never put my kid in football but baseball is a consideration
Ah, okay. Well of them all, baseball is the least damaging. Most college students have permanent knee damage as a minimum (which is why most don't go pro because they have destroyed their bodies and can't).
I mean a know a lot of dudes who got baseball concussions but its the only sport aside from volleyball that i dont find boring
I mean i do want them to do both of those for at least a year but its not something i’d want them to keep up yearly like a sport
