How good is Google translate?

I can not really tell if Google translate is translating sentences or words properly.
It is efficient in prominent languages. Like Spanish, french, german etc. But fails for lesser known languages. Although its failures can be ignored for casual usage.
However, its success is limited to short sentences. The moment you try to use it for bulk documents, it might fail to a point that it changes the meaning of the paragraph.
If you have basic understanding of the languages you are translating, you will be able to catch these mistakes quite easily.

Its pretty decent but its certainly better at some languages compared to others and also depending on how you use the language it can also cause problems. A good example is the usage of slang and other regional variations.
As such google can make grammatical errors but the meaning itself is usually preserved.

Idioms, informal language and expressions unique to different languages will not be translated correctly, and will generally result in gibberish.
it is something like 60% on most languages.
It doesn't do grammar correction or reading comprehension. So you may be asking the right question in your fluent language, but it may be garbled nonsense in the language you want to translate to.
I would not rely on it for anything complicated or critically important. It's more useful for interpreting the meaning of straightforward phrases than an ongoing conversation.
