Uou can't campaign for racial diversity in the movies then make a non racially diverse movie. Movies should reflect racial demographics.
You just keep dismantling your entire argument with each person you respond to. Also, it's part of a racially diverse franchise/series therefore the universe it's in is already diverse enough.
Racially diverse means the inclusion of other races not exclusion of other races.
Yes. Probably needs more African actors too rather than African americans. Movies should be more diverse and Africa itself needs to be more racially diverse.
I am pretty sure that the fictional nation of Wakanda is represented precisely as it is meant to be.
Asker, are you going to complain about how the live action Mulan will have too many Chinese people in it? “A movie set in China cannot have these many Chinese people! It just doesn’t make sense!”
The problem with society these days is this: chinese place with lots of chinese actors. Ok.African place with black actors. Ok.European place with white actors. Not ok, racist, more diversity needed, opression, bla bla bla. That is what the asker is hinting at I think, and if so, then yeah she is right
@SirMavane I mean, Europe is pretty diverse though. It’s not like there are only white people there - in fact, that was never the case. Black, brown and Asian people have lived in Europe for as long as there has been seafaring trade.
China is very diverse with 32 different racial ethnicities or are you saying all Chinese look alike.
So you mean to say the Asker had a point and lost it for pulling the racist card. You can dislike this development all you like, but it's just as much an excess of a social movement as beating up people of colour (or whatever they prefer to be called). Now, this might sound like I'm agreeing with you, which is correct to a certain point, but what I'm trying to emphasize is the excess part of it. It's a result of someone trying to do right by someone else and seriously botching it up in the process.
@Kromwell Africa has always had white people since the days of seafaring trade.
Girl, I *am* Chinese. China is the most racially diverse country in the world. There are more than 140 distinct groups, actually. And they’re all Chinese. They don’t all look the same, but they’re all still Chinese. So why is it okay for there to be only Chinese people in a movie set in China, but a fictional African nation that is canonically only black people needs to have more white people in it?
Your right needs more diversity in mulan, maybe a white female as Mulan
Now I know you’re trolling. 🙄
Well there wasn't a question about Europe being diverse. Just because it is doesn't mean you need to use every group, but in nowadays society you are basically forced to not allow only white people, but all black or chinese is fine. Thats the problem
@SirMavane why do white people always need to be the centre of attention?
Once again twisting the argument into something i did not say. I'm saying that IF someone were to pick full white casts there would be an uproar while any other nation is fine. This is the problem. Its not that white people need to be the centre of attention, its just unfair
@SirMavane I mean, the majority of Hollywood movies have all white or nearly all white casts. If a character is white, it usually doesn’t change their character at all. But making Hua Mulan into a white woman in I don't know France or wherever changes something very, very fundamental about her.
Well the same goes for making people like sherlock holmes. A classical englishman, a black person, or making JAMES bond, an African American woman. This is the stuff that people have been proposing too.
@SirMavane how does being a black woman make Sherlock Holmes different? They would still be clever and make logical deductions from their surroundings. How does James Bond being black make him anything less than the terrible spy he already is?
James bond, an englishman, isn't really the name you'd associate with a female black person would you? Its been this way for god knows how many movies now, why the sudden change. And you just stated that changing mulan into a white woman would completely change the character, well the same happens for the above described situation. Meanwhile if we made a movie about a black person like MLK and depicted him as white then everyone would cry racism and cultural appropriation and what not, yet we're supposed to accept the situation when its a white person depicted as a black person.
@SirMavane both Hua Mulan and MLK are/were real historical figures
"why do white people always need to be the centre of attention?" Thats a racist and offensive statement
If you want to play it that way then: beethoven. People claim he was black too, while he was a historical white figure. How about that then
@SirMavane has anyone seen an actual portrait of him? Same with Shakespeare. We have no idea what he looked like like. Does it change the quality of their work for them to be not-white? No.
Asker, if you cared about “accuracy” in media, then less than a third of characters would be white, given that white people make up about 30% of the global population. Black and brown people make up a significant portion of the US, so it doesn’t make sense for there to be all white casts for media set in the US. Why does there need to be a white person in every type of media that you consume?
Exactly. Nothing wrong with malcolm x being played by a white man.
Malcolm X is a literal existing black person. Who literally fought for the rights of black people.
Categorizing people into Black and brown is tone deaf and kind of racist. Well over 30% of all charcters in tv shows and movies are poc.
Which makes sense, because they make up roughly 70% of the global population.
Shakespeare is literally a historic charcter who produced great works of art in the anglosphere
And not a soul has any clue what he looks like. So it’s plausible that he could have been black. Or Asian. Or Latinx.
Yes we do.https://goo.gl/images/PvmNwm
Same for Malcolm x he could have been a white surgically altered to look black by the cia
If you knew anything about anything, you would know that portrait has been found to have been altered. There is no surviving portrait of Shakespeare. Not one that was painted during his lifetime, anyway. We don’t know what he looked like.
Yes because there were Africans in medevil England lol
First of all, yes, there were. Secondly, the mediaeval period was from roughly 400 to 1400 AD. Shakespeare lived in the Elizabethan era and was actively writing from the late 16th to the early 17th century.
The reason I do not believe they were non white is because thats said by the same people who claim the cia hides trumps black skin by painting him orange, which is clear utter bs
@SirMavane a lot of people claiming that, are they? Why is Beethoven’s whiteness so important to his work?
Why is it so important to people to claim he's black?
@SirMavane it isn’t. I’ve honestly never heard of this. But why are you so offended that people are? What does it take away from his work?
Because people are stealing culture that isn't theirs. Be proud of yours, don't steal that of others
@SirMavane see, that’s the thing. You say “don’t steal our culture! Celebrate your own!” and then get totally pissed off when there’s a movie that celebrates black culture because “there’s not enough white people!!!” Then, you turn around and make Emma Stone and Scarlett Johansson play PoC characters and claim that it’s offensive to “steal” culture.
Except that is not true, i never said that it should have more white people, i'm just highlighting the controversy that diversity is only necessary if there is an all white cast, I never said they couldn't have an all black cast, but only if they don't whine when there is an all white one
@SirMavane en.m.wikipedia.org/.../Ghost_in_the_Shell_(2017_film)https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aloha_(film)en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Firefly_(TV_series)en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Death_Note_(2017_film)I could go on forever. And this is only the whitewashing of Asian roles.
But I thought the skin colour didn't matter, only their work 🤔Or is that now suddenly not true anymore
@SirMavane when there is a minority of roles that are written for you, it matters. Plus, most of these characters are supposed to be Asian still. In what universe is Scarlett Johansson a Japanese woman?
So is the cast of black panther African or African American because it's not the same thing.
Well the james bond role might be played by a black person, even though he has always been white and is English, a predominantly white country, you didn't seem to mind it then, but now that your characters are played by a white person its suddenly wrong. Seems a little hypocritical to me
@SirMavane and how many thousands of roles are there for white people?
Asker, do your own research.
Shouldn't matter should it. People get picked because of their achievements and skill in acting, if white people are better actors, they'll get more roles, if black people are better actors, they'll get more roles, simple as that
@SirMavane why do white people have to be the centre of attention? Like, why is it always about how many more white people you can stuff into a movie literally about black people in Africa?
Why is it that you never listen? I literally told you that that is not the point im trying to get across nor an opinion I back.
@SirMavane so, then, why are you so adamant that “white” should only go to white actors, but also the PoC roles too? Sounds like colonialism to me, vaquero.
I think it wrong for a Mexican to play an Arab just because of brown skin
I'm saying that the roles that have been white should stay that way because its familiar, its what we started watching and nostalgia makes you want to keep it that way. If you suddenly change it up the story won't make any sense anymore. And I did not state that we should have the POC roles too, i said that the best actor should get the role.
@SirMavane that is boring and ridiculous.
Well your point about ghost in the shell etc isn't helping you with that unless you accept the roles to be non Asian and non white. In which case I don't see the big deal that they are being played by white people
@SirMavane there are next to no roles written for us Asians. Why exactly should a Japanese robot in Tokyo be played by a white devil?
Are you sure it doesn't reflect racial demographics the same way there are zero white roles written for whites in Bollywood, chineese or Japanese cinema?
So then I can make the statement that a classical englishman in a predominantly white country should be white correct?
@SirMavane no, because there are thousands of roles written for white people, and it doesn’t change anything about the character to make them not white. Which I have said already. But y’all apparently just don’t want to see non-white people in media because y’all believe they’re ugly or untalented or something. I’m tired of your foolish bleating about how only white people should act.
Or because racial demographics represent all fairly in movies.
Asker, either use generally recognizable and decipherable language, or don’t say anything at all.
One might ask the same of you, darling.
I rest my case. Hypocrisy of the left.
There's plenty of movies that are 90% white though.
That people bitch about not realising most of the population in the West is white
Black panther is in an African country with a 90% or more black population. If we say black panther needs more diversity then we have to question every movie with a cast of mostly one race. Also the German Empire movie wouldn't bother me since most Germans are white and they want to be as accurate as possible. A good example of a movie is The Patriot movie.
@dev765 Yes, however to claim it's "hella diverse" with 90% being black is also bullshit
Hypocrisy of the left wing brother, look at that one idiots comment saying that Europe shouldn't have majority white actors but every other continent can!
*can have their own ethnic actors
Scroll Down to Read Other Opinions
Yes where is the white friend in black panther?
I don't know I've never seen it but when they add friends of different race I don't feel like other races are being involved they just add them because they don't want there show to be called racist.
So this film doesn't even pretend not to be racist
Its not I'm sure that there are a 100's of white films go a make a problem from them
Those white films reflect the demographics
There's 2 white guys in it and one was there basically through out the whole movie. So...
No you can't have movies just for yourself as that's racist. It's good that people of color have a platform but one of those colors is white and there are other colors besides black.
How many times have people told us no and left us out! There are hundreds of movies that NEEEED diversity, yet there wasn't any. Let us have our movie. The problem is that it's getting so much hype and people are uncomfortable. People of color deserve to be celebrated. No ifs or buts. We can agree to disagree. I see from your perspective, but I've witnessed and felt the lack of diversity for too long.
People of color are not being celebrated in black panther just African americans to the exclusion of people of color which is racist. I feel the lack of diversity in movies that's why black panther needs boycotting.
Being racist is oppressing a whole race. How is the movie oppressing to the oppressor. Again agree to disagree. I gave my opinion. If you dont want to understand say so because you seem like the close minded one here. It's simply celebrating African/African Americans. Nothing wrong with that.
If being racist is oppressing a whole race then that means that there is no longer any racism. A movie celebrating white Americans and Europeans would be deemed racist so black panther by the same rule is racist.
Most movies reflect racial demographics in the us
Asker, why would a movie about the African king of a fictional African country need to reflect the demographics of the US?
@Astoriana because of racial diversity
You're under 18 🤣 stop your whining and go do your homework. You're issue isn't racial diversity, it's that the movie isn't about slaves. Black Panther is doing better than any Marvel movie to date, its not about slaves, and there isn't anything you can do it.
Give it a rest. At this point, it's obvious you're just an underage troll. That and none of your arguments have held up anywhere on this thread. You can't and won't stop the movie. Persistence isn't your friend here.
700 million for black panther. Suck it.
Does that mean it's not about black people when it comes to diversity?
Are you threatened by a movie expressing white culture?
Basically every Hollywood movie ever is “white culture.” Why do y’all need to be the centre of attention all of the time? Why is it offensive to you to have a movie about someone else’s culture?
@Astoriana it's not your culture. Your American.
Am I, darling? Are you certain?
@Astoriana if anything it's appropriating African culture.
A fictional culture.
@Astoriana yes they appropriated from all over Africa for a fictional country
You don’t really understand that word, do you?
@Astoriana taking elements Of a culture not your own?
To make fun of it, or to pass off as something new. Black Panther is pretty clearly cultural appreciation.
@Astoriana it was written by white men in the 60s
And its being reinterpreted and directed by a BLACK man.
Is your point that if the director and writers are American, that there should be a mostly white cast in a movie about a black African nation?
@Astoriana yes. Diversity is a must in 2018
@ asker, I understand you're being facetious, but you're being incredibly ignorant. Are African Americans too black to play white roles, but not black enough to play fictional African characters? What about Lupita (Kenyan) and Danai (Zimbabwean)? Is Daniel Kaluuya not appropriate because he's English? Do you feel butthurt purely because the first black blockbuster film is being made that is not about slavery?
@Gypsy_x allow me to answer on @askers behalf. "Yes, I feel threatened"
@Pegases indeed! When you're accustomed to privilege, movements towards equality look like oppression.
As Americans we all enjoy first world privledge
As an American, you assume everyone else enjoys the same privileges you do, and you don't know how many countries have it better.I am not American.
First world privledge?
Of course, but are you actually aware of how within even first world countries, discrimination and institutionalised racism put some groups at more of a disadvantage than others.
Yeah those Jews and Asians are really struggling.
You're very ignorant and prejudiced for someone under 18. I hope you grow out of it as you get smarter.
Says the person who think non-whites are mentally challenged
Oh? Where did I say that? Comprehension is not one of your strong points. Anywho, can't teach stupid. Catchya.
Minorities are just as capable as whites are.
Asker, wow. You’re like the worst troll ever. Did you just swallow the entirety of Faux News?
That they are, but they don't always have all the opportunities that white people do. After years of being sidelined and ignored, a blockbuster Comic film is being made with a predominantly black cast, and YOU'RE the one kicking up a fuss.
Racism and inequality must be fought in all its forms. By not treating non-whites equally instead offering special treatment you are being racist.
Equality is not always about treating everyone the same – it is about treating people in such a way that the outcome for each person can be the same. This means putting things in place to support people to achieve similar outcomes.
So taking from those who worked hard to give to those who didnt? Sounds racist to say non-whites can't work as hard as white people.
Lol so everyone who has money and power worked hard for it? They all work harder than single mums working 2 jobs on minimum wage to feed and educate her kids? No rich people were handed everything by their rich family? You are an absolute idiot. It's obvious you have zero life experience. Get out of your bubble.
Wow, she DID swallow Faux News whole.
@Astoriana why do I bother?
My mom is a single mom I guess she isn't defined by your narrative of throwing welfare scraps to the poor
Good on her, unfortunately not everyone has the support system and opportunities to overcome their situation. The whole "you can do anything, you just have to work hard enough" mantra that society is taught was made by rich people who wanted to give enough hope to people to make them work, but also provides an excuse for their lack of success (i. e. if you aren't successful, you just haven't worked hard enough!).
Bullshit. The whole welfare thing was invented by rich liberals as means of keeping the poor down.
Actually, welfare was invented for widowed white women to be able to feed their children after their husbands were killed in WWII while they looked for new husbands. WoC weren’t even entitled to welfare benefits until after civil rights.
@Astoriana you mean widowed women who were being supported for their husband's sacrafice to help free the world
No. Widowed white women only. Black women’s husbands fought and died in the wars too - but fuck if they were entitled to any benefits for their sacrifices.
@Astoriana those damme liberals discriminating against black war widows. Disgraceful.
Girl, don’t try and spin it like you give two fucks about black people. We know that you don’t.
@Astoriana why would I not care about my people?
There’s no way in hell that I believe that. You have cried so many White Tears™ that you’re definitely not black.
@Astoriana "White Tears" is a racist slur, please don't be racist. Either your against racial in all its forms or your are for it.
You just keep proving my point.
@Astoriana that I call you our on your racism?
That it’s not racist to want All The Whites™ to have everything, except for when it’s convenient to you, in which case, you suddenly become black.
@Astoriana dividing people into colors is extremely racist. I didn't suddenly become anything you just assumed that if I wasn't down with your racism that I must be white.
So, if it’s racist to divide people by colour, why should there be more white people in Black Panther?
@Astoriana because it's excluding non Africans which is racist
Why does a movie about an African king need more non-Africans?
@Astoriana because we need movies to be racially diverse.
But Wakanda is not racially diverse.
@Astoriana yeah but they should be, otherwise they are a racist, xenophobic regime that won't take in immigrants or refugees.
Oh, so you admit that your president is a racist, evil xenophobe? Wow, asker. I’m so proud of your growth. You finally recognize the evil that is Donal Trump.
@Astoriana basically African Nazis.
Like how Republicans are American Nazis?
@Astoriana I recognise it. That's why I say racism must be fought everywhere and why we we need more diversity and multiculturalism espicially in places like Africa where there is little diversity.
You really are the most ignorant white girl I have ever met.
Oh, so all black people look the same to you? Damn, Asker. That’s racist as hell.
@Astoriana republicans and the democrats. I mean Hillary Clinton described black men as super predators and good ok bill put millions of young black into jail for misdemenours. Lyndon Johnston sent a disproportionate amount of young black men to Vietnam. Senator Robert Byrd was a high ranking KKK member so nobody's innocent. The Democrats have always used African americans either as slaves, scapegoats, cannon fodder or for votes. We need a new part in this country that is neither Democrat or Republican.
@Astoriana I'm black.
Ok, little white girl.
@Astoriana no I'm actually black. The difference between you and me is that I think black people can advance in society without some white saviour like in every Hollywood movie.
Come off Anonymous and prove it then. 🙂
@Astoriana I dont have too and you as a white person have no right to call me an uncle tom.
I’m not white. Not wholly anyway.
@Astoriana so you understand the importance of not being tolerant of other cultures and those of different ethnicities.
So you think that we should be intolerant of other cultures and ethnicities?
@Astoriana *so you understand the importance of being tolerant of other cultures and those of different ethnicities.*I worked it wrong.
Sure you did, doll.
@Astoriana yes I did. Now your just trolling.
Says the ultimate troll.
@Astoriana says queen of the trolls
@asker what does diversity in film have to do with white saviours though? Lol you finally have a film where black people get to save themselves
Yes but at the exclusion of all other races, it kinda undermines the whole push for multiethnic representation in movies. White saviour complex is a sickening theme in half of all Hollywood movies. You know the kind of movie where some young pretty white teacher goes to teach into the ghetto and she turns the lives around of the POC students just by her presence and can do attitude.
The thing is, a lot of those movies are based on true stories (Blind side, freedom writers, etc). And diversity is important in films where the persons ethnicity isn't instrumental to their children character. In period films or whatever, there is usually little diversity (Elizabethan, Ancient greek etc movies are usually all white). But in modern day action films, movies should try and be diverse to represent society, and allow POC to have complex characters rather than stereotypical or token roles.
Yeah because poc are usually only a supporting friend or advice giver
Yes. So now you have an entire movie where the cast get to play non-token roles, and little white girl has a problem with it because “there aren’t enough white people!!!”
So racial diversity Is bullshit?
Lol did I say that
Either your for it or against it.
Lol I'm all for it really but they're trying to make it accurate to the comic books so there's only going to be a handful of white people don't take it up the butt or get offended by it
But the cast are mostly black not African.
Doesn't matter black is black.
That's racially ignorant
Lets not play this game because you make no sense.
Why thumbs down? Its obvious some people here have never lived in different countries
Exactly each black person from different countries act different we all don't act like them.
I'm tired of people associating African American stereotypes on the rest of the black race. What about black Hispanics, West Indians etc. Like we all have different cultural upbringings.
I know, many different people
Coming from a black Caribbean girl I hate when they associate all of us in there culture when we are completely different.
I'm tired of white American bigots. White people outside of America are usually less ignorant.
All white movies? Most movies reflect racial demographics
No honey. All the movies on tv only have one Asian or one black person or one Arab. The rest is all black.I can point you the list of cinema movies right now and they are all white people movies. Also I take this as a no, you only whine when you’re not included. Don’t be jealous.
The rest is all white*****
Are you going to whine for these movies too:https://www.pathe.nl/bioscoopagenda/bioscoop/arenaBesides this movie is in Africa I don’t know why you think it should be diverse. All the European history movies only have white people.
Well that sounds to match up to racial demographically."As of July 2016, white Americans are the racial majority. African Americans are the largest racial minority, amounting to 13.3% of the population. Hispanic and Latino Americans amount to 17.8% of the total U. S. population, making up the largest ethnic minority. The White, non-Hispanic or Latino population make up 61.3% of the nation's total, with the total White population (including White Hispanics and Latinos) being 76.9%."
Doesn’t answer my questions? Do you whine about all white movies too? Even if there are more white people don’t mean anything. Since they don’t make movies to accurately show all the demographics. Also funny this is your argument when you whine about a movie in Africa where most people are black.Hypocriticy at its finest.
So it's wrong for a mostly white cast in America but ok for an all white cast in Africa. May I just point out that there are 6 million white people in Africa.
Girl speaking against your only argument you had for this black movie based in Africa. You’re a joke.
Racial diversity is important to combat racism. Your being against diversity in this movie is kinda racist.
You being whiny about a black movie based of Africa, but not whining about all white movies is racist. You only find something racist if you’re not included that’s pathetic. I’m Asian and I’m almost never included you’re white and you’re always included even in this movie you are, yet you whine about a tiny % of white people in this movie. Go cry in a corner. The world does not revolve around you.
The white movies you talk are representive of demographics that is 76.9% white. Like where in Hong Kong cinema are white people represented? Also stop being racist.
You should stop being a jealous hater of one black movie that still has white peoples in it. But don’t complain about a all white movie. Your racism is showing, stop it.
Those "white" movies you talk about reflect racial demographics You complain about all white movies but don't think all Asian or African movies are wrong. That's called racism. Your either for diversity or your not.
Just admit your a hypocrite and racist so we can move on.
You are the hypocrit racist because you are opposed to multiculturalism and racial diversity.
Get a life troll.
Stop being racist you racist.
... laughed the racist !
I'm muting this question, this is getting harassment now.
Racial diversity. Africa has had whites for hundred of years but this film protrays a racial pure anti multicultural nation that bans other races from immigrating
Yea but you do have to realize that this is fiction and not everything is based off facts. This is the Black Panther storyline and they are going to stick to it. I wouldn't have any problem with it because I think it'd be good either way but it's up to the people making the movie, you know?
So it's excluding other races?
Yes it is
