Should my job understand that I'm trying to help with the Coronavirus?

I work as a full-time engineer, and a part time reserve deputy for a local sheriffs department. They sent us home for my engineer job. There's remote work to do, but for the most part it seems like we're just killing time to get paid. The county in which I work at as a deputy is freaking out because of Covid-19 panic. A lot of fights, and attempts to control mass crowds lining up at grocery stores. I worked a 16 hour shift the other day, and want to keep working on the front lines to help assist in this pandemic. My boss wants me to work remote more even though we're just killing time in my opinion. I mentioned I'll use all my vacation and sick days, and he became a little upset.
