“Taking a long marathon run step by step could have a negative impact on my documentary film. So I thought something different. I pulled their tired faces and knees. I wanted to show the will of the athletes. The Will cannot be visualized but can be expressed as music. If you watch the music in the marathon sequence, you feel as if the athletes have been whipped. The music expresses the will not to collapse but to reach the stadium, the camera looks down the torso, as we'd practised it to the tired legs almost sticking to the asphalt and this difference, this portrayal maybe raised the film above the level of ordinary reportage.“
