From my point of view, it's not our place to get involved in other countries no matter what. The United States and most European powers have a dark legacy of colonialism. Part of what drove this legacy, aside from power and economics, was also the desire to "civilize" the rest of the world. Particularly bringing an end to pagan practices that the Christian west found to be offensive, and the conversion to the faith from the natives that they conquered. My point is that I am seeing these same parallels going on today. What we see as banning barbaric practices and modernizing other nations, they see it as external forces meddling into their country and their way of life. The global opposition sees it as modern day imperialism and even racism. Where do you stand on this issue? Do you think we should flex our muscles and bully other countries to see things our way? Or do we restrain ourselves and respect their way of life? Should we allow them to continue a practice that they have performed for centuries? If they refuse to outlaw this practice willingly, how far would you be willing to go? FGM stands for female genital mutilation, or female circumcision.
