In my class today, we were discussing perceptual biases. And the professor quickly got into about examples in everyday life. And the felony in applications was an example. We, as humans, will unfortunately assume a lot about others based on few information. I know I definitely am guilty of this.

So the mini discussion was if its a good idea? And I said no. I know, I know, super liberal Buchys is ok with prejudice? Yes. Because in my very narrow opinion, we should know if theyre felons. I mean, thats an added liability to the job. It's very hard for me to admit it, but I dont think most people can change. I do think people deserve second chances, but to an extent. Im all over the place haha sorry. I want to say yes so felons can have a second chance at life and not have to resort to crime again to make a living, but I want to say no because it is an unfair liability for the employer and the coworkers, and the public really (depending if its like a customer service position). I mean, its not like they automatically dont get the job just by checking yes to felonies. And as for public assistance? I mean, again, I want to say yes if they have kids, because you dont really punish adults when there's kids involved, you punish the children. But otherwise, Ill say no if theyre adults. Im leaning more towards no across the board and keep the "check here for felons" box.

-Crime rates drop when unemployment drops. And former felons resort to crime to make a living because they can't find jobs. Removing that question helps increase chances of employment.
-Some movements want to extend it beyond jobs - also for loans, public assistance, insurance, and other services.

So what do y'all think? Should applications be prohibited from asking about past felony convictions? Maybe just on job applications? Maybe everywhere like on public assistance, loans, etc?
