YouTube has become known for being difficult for creators on the site. You can't talk about certain topics, certain words and sometimes a video can be demonetised even if they follow the rules; as long as YouTube gives their own reason. They've also cracked down on money from outside sources such as Patreon. Lots of creators have complained about the difficulties they've faced on the site and while there have been many attempts to make a change... all seem to fall on deaf ears.

Recently, YouTube has announced a change in policy that will start in 2018: in order to be monetised, a channel needs to have 1000 subscribers and 4000 hours of their content needs to be viewed and that needs to be viewed within a year. YouTube also plans to have humans review content on the site rather than the previous automated system and while it's good to know there's a human you can reason with, those humans haven't been known to make the best decisions...

For me personally, i'm on board with all those changes except maybe the stipulation of 4000 hours of content viewed a year. I personally don't have much experience in YouTube, but to me, 4000 hours in only 1 year sounds like a lot for someone just starting out on YouTube, even if you're entertaining.

In conclusion, my question is this: If I (or anyone else) wanted to START a YouTube career in 2018 with the hopes of one day turning it into a sustainable career... could they do it? I personally think it's possible, but I wouldn't recommend putting all your eggs in one basket; have a job on the side that pays the bills while you build up your channel.

I'd like to hear what others think though; Is it possible to start a YouTube career in 2018?
