How many of you out there actually know how to drive a manual (standard) transmission?

I’m not making any sexual references here on this question. I’m actually asking about driving a vehicle.

I know that my parents didn’t allow me to get my license until I had learned to drive an automobile with a manual transmission back when I was 15 or so.

I’ve dated a couple of women who didn’t know how to drive one and it seems like it’s becoming a “lost art” as more and more cars made today are automatic. Also, a few of my younger friends have no idea how to drive one.

I personally prefer to drive a standard or manual transmission whatever you want to call it.

I'm going to buy a new car soon (a Mustang) and trying to decide over whether to go for a manual or automatic. I've always driven automatic, but am curious about manual, especially on a car like a Mustang.

However, I would test drive a manual car but I've never driven one. And all my friends & family drive automatics so I would be driving manual for the first time on my new car.

So I'm torn as to which transmission to get. The Mustang will be my daily driver and I plan on keeping it as long as I can. Hopefully for 10 or more years like my last car, which was bought when I was a kid and given to me 15 years later.

Since each region has it's own time periods we'll focus on Western Civilization for this question which is mainly Europe and the US.

Here are definitions of each one:

Stone Age: marked by the use of stone implements and weapons: subdivided into the Paleolithic, Mesolithic, and Neolithic periods.

Bronze Age: a technological stage between the Stone and Iron Ages, beginning in the Middle East about 4500 because and lasting in Britain from about 2000 to 500 because , during which weapons and tools were made of bronze and there was intensive trading

Iron Age: The period of history, succeeding the Bronze Age, when people first learned to extract iron from ore and use it to forge tools, weapons, and other objects. The first organized production of iron objects developed in southwestern Asia shortly after 2000 b.c.

Classical age: The age of ancient history dominated by the cultures of Greece and Rome, about 500 b.c. to about a.d. 500.

Dark Ages (late antiquity): A term sometimes applied to the early Middle Ages, the first few centuries after the Fall of Rome. The term suggests prevailing ignorance and barbarism, but there were forces for culture and enlightenment throughout the period.

Medieval Age: the time in European history between classical antiquity and the Italian Renaissance (from about 500 a.d. to about 1350): sometimes restricted to the later part of this period (after 1100) and sometimes extended to 1450 or 1500.

Renaissance: The cultural rebirth that occurred in Europe from roughly the fourteenth through the middle of the seventeenth centuries, based on the rediscovery of the literature of Greece and Rome. During the Renaissance, America was discovered, and the Reformation began;

Industrial Age: The rapid industrial growth that began in England during the middle of the eighteenth century and then spread over the next 50 years to many other countries, including the United States.

Modern Age: cultural tendencies and array of associated cultural movements, originally arising from wide-scale and far-reaching changes to Western society in the late 19th and early 20th centuries

Information Age: a period beginning about 1975 and characterized by the gathering and almost instantaneous transmission of vast amounts of information and by the rise of information-based industries.
