The term empire derives from the Latin imperium (power, authority). Politically, an empire is a geographically extensive group of states and peoples (ethnic groups) united and ruled either by a monarch (emperor, empress) or an oligarchy. Geopolitically, the term empire has denoted very different, territorially-extreme states — at the strong end, the extensive Spanish Empire (16th c.) and the British Empire (19th c.), at the weak end, the Holy Roman Empire (8th c.–19th c.), in its Medieval and early-modern forms.

Etymologically, the political usage of empire denotes a strong, centrally-controlled nation-state, but in the looser vernacular usage, it can denote a large-scale business enterprise (i.e. a transnational corporation) and a political organisation of either national-, regional- or city scale, controlled either by a person (a political boss) or a group authority (political bosses).[1]

An imperial political structure is established and maintained two ways: (i) as a territorial empire of direct conquest and control with force (direct, physical action to compel the emperor’s goals), and (ii) as a coercive, hegemonic empire of indirect conquest and control with power (the perception that the emperor can physically enforce his desired goals). The former provides greater tribute and direct political control, yet limits further expansion because it absorbs military forces to fixed garrisons. The latter provides less tribute and indirect control, but avails military forces for further expansion.[2] Territorial empires (e.g. the Mongol Empire, the Median Empire) tended to be contiguous areas. The term on occasion has been applied to maritime empires or thalassocracies, (e.g. the Athenian and British Empires) with looser structures and more scattered territories.

American Empire; identifying an empire from the USAAmerican Empire, by its international behavior, is controversial. Stuart Creighton Miller posits that the public's sense of innocence about Realpolitik (cf. American Exceptionalism) impairs popular recognition of US imperial conduct. Since it governed other countries via surrogates — domestically-weak, right-wing governments that collapse without US support.[9] G.W. Bush's Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld said: “We don’t seek empires. We’re not imperialistic; we never have been”[10] — directly contradicts Thomas Jefferson, in the 1780s, awaiting the fall of the Spanish empire: “. . . till our population can be sufficiently advanced to gain it from them piece by piece”.[11] This indicates that countries goals can change over 200 years.[12][13] In turn, Leftist historian Sidney Lens notes that from its inception the US has used every means to dominate other nations.[14]

Met a new girl recently and I am pretty pleased, but I'm trying to hang back a bit and not get carried away. My history is 15 years of marriage and now separated and will be getting divorced. Newly on the market and not actively pursuing girls, but when one comes along...

Met this girl a couple of weeks ago at my friend's night club. Real attractive, smart, good talker. Asked me if I had a girlfriend, I was honest with my situation. She didn't mind. I'm also considerably older than her. She likes it that way. After talking for about 3 hours she left. I hung out longer and spent the next 24 hours kicking myself for not asking her for her number. I didn't expect to see her again...

I did see her again this week. She came up and gave me a hug and cheek kiss (she is Brazilian, so I don't over-weigh this). We ended up talking a lot again. She gave me her number without me really asking for it. I SMSed her back to give her mine. We talked a lot more.

About 3 hours later she headed home.

20 minutes after she left she SMSed me telling me she was safe at home and was sorry for leaving me alone. This message was accompanied by a kissy-face emoticon.

I responded shortly after saying I was glad she was home warm and safe and I look forward to buying her dessert one day (we talked about this earlier). To feel her out, I addressed her as "sweetie".

She messaged back with 4 thumbs up icons, two exclamation points, "take care and have a good nite!" and then 7 kissy-face icons.

I'm feeling pretty good at this point.

I messaged her the next day to see if she wanted to get something to eat. Unfortunately she got real sick overnight (she was coming down with something earlier, hence my being glad she was home warm and safe). we SMSed a few times. She called me sweetie, and there were more kissy-face icons.

I called her last night and she sounded terrible. Right before this my club-owner friend called me to apologize for not coming to the gym. He is dying too. I guess I am OK so far, but something bad is going around...

Anyway, I figure I'll leave her alone today and get back in touch in a day or so.

Now, for some interesting points:

She used to be a hostess here in Japan. I found this out when my friend told me after I met her the first night. This initially disappointed me as I thought her reactions and interest that first night might not have been genuine. Turns out she quit that work a couple of months ago, so it was likely genuine. Increased signs of interest and the way she gave me her number is also comforting.

She is planning to winter in Australia. I have about three weeks before she leaves. She has a friend there who is about to have her first child and will be helping her and enjoying the warm weather. As such, I feel I am on a deadline to get something going...

Now I just have to balance my enthusiasm with the time line and at the same time not over-doing it.
