The Straight Man, Funny Man is a type of comedy pairing (or double act) that one can usually find in TV or film, that involves one person being the Straight Man, the other the Funny Man. The humor comes from how the two interact with each other.

The Straight Man is usually the one who is more serious and reasonable, who goes "by the book", or is more anchored in practicality and efficacy.

The Funny Man is usually the one who is more comical, more child-like (or silly), more whimsical, who is also more likely to take daring leaps of intuition.

Don't be mistaken though: The Straight Man doesn't have to be humorless, nor is the Funny Man the one always providing the laugh. Sometimes, the Straight Man is the one who gets the laugh by coming with a dead-pan one-liner to the Funny Man's antics.

From studying TV shows and Films, the more popular heterosexual pairing is the Woman as the Straight Man, the Man as the Funny Man. Not to say the reverse doesn't exist, but from what I've gone through, that's definitely the dynamic that shows up more often. (For example: Mulder and Scully in X-Files)

I ask this question because I want to examine whether the same dynamic happens in real life, in relationships that exist outside the realm of TV and Film.
