I've been searching for the answer to this question for a long time. When people lead someone on (flirt with them to some degree, making the other person think they are interested, when they in reality they are not), do you think they do so on purpose because they are looking for attention, or do they do it simply out of naivety and ignorance?

I used to think that when people did this, it was on purpose. That they were just selfish people who wanted attention and go as far as they could to get it, until they were forced to back off because the other person made a move and forced their hand. To a degree I still feel this is true and it might be the case for some people.

However, just the other night, I learned a lesson via a female friend of mine. Me and a few friends were at the club drinking and dancing. One of the girls who is very attractive at one point had this guy dancing with her. She eventually followed him to the bar and spent at least an half hour talking to him and letting him put his arm around her and stuff. The rest of us found this strange because we knew she had a guy who she is already sort of dating and she's really not the type to cheat. When we left the bar, she informed us that she gave the guy a fake number and had simply asked him for one dance which led to everything else. At this point we all sort of rolled our eyes and said that she asked for it then. The point is that she just had a complete lack of understanding of how the male mind works and figured her innocent request for a dance would not lead to anything else. It wasn't that she just felt like absorbing this guys attention all night only to blow him off later (or maybe she did).

So anyway, what do you guys think. For the most part, do you think people lead others on because they just don't see what they are doing, or is it that they do it o purpose because they like the attention they get?

Now I'm pretty sure I already know the answer to this but I figured it wouldn't hurt to get some outside opinions.

I met this girl at school a few weeks ago. I just moved to another state for school and have a few classes with this girl. To make a long story short, due to us having some classes together and a mutual friend, we've sort of become quick friends.

Some of the signs that she has given, that make me think she likes me are:

1. Our first time hanging out at a school football game she pretty much stuck close to me (sat next to me, talked to me, left with me, walked with me, etc.). She also kept asking if I was having fun.

2. The same night, she invited me back to hang out at her dorm with her and her friends and at the end of the night, sent me a text, asking me to text her when I made it to my car and again asking if I had fun. I responded and let her know I had fun and that we should hang out again next weekend, and upon doing so, her response was "next weekend for sure!".

3. She invited me to check out a bar downtown with her.

4. I texted her to ask about a meeting she attended. She called me instead of texting and we talked for an hour, well into the night.

5. When leaving class, she always waits up for me and walks/talks with me.

As a guy, I know that if I did this sort of stuff, it would mean I had a crush on the girl. But I'm not so sure about it when it comes to how women think. Clearly she likes me as a person, but I'm just not sure if she simply sees me as a cool new friend, or if she is actually romantically interested. So what do you guys think?
