I know I have and still do. Anyone else? And for anyone who doesn't know that that is here's a definition and an example.

When a middle child - typically of a family of three kids who are close in age - feels left out or neglected.

Because the bigger sibling is the first born and typically an over-achiever, they are the most important and get the most privileges. A younger sibling is the 'baby' of a family and gets away with more as well as being the most looked-after. Middle-child syndrome starts when the middle child is squeezed between these two and have trouble finding their 'niche' in the family.

Middle children will sometimes...
-misbehave to get attention
-go with the flow
-work as little as possible
-be less parent-dependent then their siblings
-become the 'loner' of the family, not participate in family events unless told to.
-play the peacemaker
-be more likely to go to a friend for advice than a parent
-be very creative

In short its where the older child gets all the awards, the younger gets all the love, and the middle gets nothing.
(A real-life example of what happened to my younger sis, who suffers from middle child syndrome)

Oldest: Hey I just turned 16!
Mom: Lets go pick you out a car!
Oldest: Yay!

-1 1/2 years later-

Middle: Hey I just turned 16!
Mom: Oh.. er.. well we're still paying for your sib's car, so you'll have to just borrow from her when you can..
Middle: >.>

-2 years later-

Youngest: Hey! I just turned 16!
Mom: Yay! And I just finished paying for the other car! Lets go get you a car!
Middle: Hey! I should be the next one to get a new car!
Youngest: but its MY birthday
middle: Thats stupid
youngest: MOMMY SHE JUST CALLED ME STUPID!!
mom: Be nice to your little sister on her birthday!! Come on, birthday-girl! Lets go get that car!
Youngest: WOO!

I've become friends with this girl. The other day, we shared a deep and meaningful conversation. Ever since, she's been hugging me every chance she gets and generally being all touchy feely in a non-sexual way (leaning on me, poking me, resting head on my shoulder etc).

Over the last week, I've been over to her place a few times to study for exams, where this behaviour continued (she'd come from behind and hug me while I'm studying). Having had no physical relationship in a good 5 years, I wasn't about to complain about hugs from a member of the opposite sex, so I willingly received them. After a bit, I started doing the same; I'd wrap my arms around her stomach and she'd reach up and behind and pull me closer, a very sensual reply in my opinion. After a day of study, we watched a movie where we snuggled up nice and cozy, hand holding, hair stroking and all (no kissing or sexual business).

Now, to me, this is something only couples do. But I had a feeling that she did this with other friends. So instead of asking "Hey, do you snuggle up with your other guy friends?", I decided to kiss her on the cheek and gauge her reaction. I did so, she was very surprised and we have since had a conversation that she wasn't interested and infact does do this sort of thing with her close guy friends.

My question is, was I wrong in assuming snuggling, hand holding and general affection = interest? I am somewhat a loner with very little social experience, but isn't this sort of behaviour generally reserved for couples?

It may also be relavent that:
- She has very few friends also
- She's asexual
- She's 17, 4 years younger than me (very mature for her age though)
