So I've been talking to this guy for 7 months and things are getting serious. We met when I was 17 and he was 24 so i lied and said I was 18. BUT, I lied 3 times at first he thought I was 20 then I told him that I was actually 18 (I was 17) and then I told him that my birthday was actually tomorrow (when it was actually months from the date) and I was turning 18. I'm afraid if I came clean he'd write me off as a lair but the question isn't if I should come clean it's how I should come clean. I was thinking of something like "I have to be honest with you before we move any further. I have been lying about my age (actually.. my birthday) I was 17 the whole time we talked and I'm sorry if you think I'm a liar or that you can never trust me, and I completely understand if that's the case. I can tell you I'm not a liar and how I'm honest with everything, but I understand if you think this is a deal breaker of some sorts. I am 18 now (haha, I promise I'm not lying this time I'll show you my passport if you'd like.) and if you want to proceed with the relationship that would be great, if you want to end things and just be my friend I also understand"

So my boyfriend and I have been dating for almost 5 months. We're pretty open with how we're feeling but sometimes he makes me feel like I shouldn't feel the way I do. This is the current situation. It's my 18th birthday in 3 days and we had made plans to celebrate my birthday on the 19th of December. I requested off work that day and planned my outfit already since we were going somewhere fancy. He called me tonight and said why don't we just go out to dinner tomorrow night. I work from 1-6 pm and he won't be down where I live until 7 pm. I wanted to spend the day with him that Saturday and go to my favorite restaurant with my favorite guy. Now he wants me to just pick a different place and go out tomorrow after I get off of work. I really don't want to do that because I'm usually tired after getting off work but the problem is he has been having some problems with his mom lately and I feel like he takes some of his frustration out on me. Like he'll say something I said was dumb or he'll tell me to shut up. It hurts my feelings but then he says he was just joking and that I shouldn't take everything so seriously.

Do I have a right to be upset or not?

Sorry this was long I just don't know what to do.

My father had his moment when he was a total jerk and sometimes inconsistent. I don't call hitting with a belt or hands in frustration/anger spanking; I call it hitting. To me hitting is hitting. Some trivial things, I got hit and when I was once suspended in 8th grade for 5 days, I was immediately forgiven and even excused.

Moments he was a jerk:
2nd - 3rd grade: hit with a belt in frustration and anger for not getting the right answer to math homeworks on time or not being a fast learner. Another time it was for not learning how to use the ruler properly nor measure inches in a math problem.

5th grade: chased (well obviously a kid is going to run too; do you expect them to stay still and like getting hit with a belt) and locked myself in the bathroom for an hour or so. All that for not knowing how to properly operate a remote control as he was ''trying to teach'' me but got very impatient by the 3rd explanation and I ran fast as soon as he showed up with a leather belt. Then he had the nerves to ground me (that was his secondary option if he didn't get to use the belt) and nearly cancel my 11th b-day... as if I had done something wrong. Till this day I can't understand what I did wrong in not learning fast.

Threatened to be hit with a belt:
Both times in my freshman year of HS. One for losing a golden bracelet my political aunt had given me on my birthday. Last he ever threatened to use that (one month before my 15th b-day), he gave me some money to spend it and I bought a new pair of jeans with it. I didn't know this was going to make him furious, so once again I locked myself in the bathroom and my mother had to calm him down.

What I learned:
- Absolutely nothing
- Not to do that to a child if I ever had kids
- How scary a man in his full rage can turned; that contradicts his protective instinct because how is he (esp your own father) protecting you if he's hitting you with a belt or threatening to use it
- Have an increasing desire towards finding a mild tempered man that's against hitting a child (that we're on the same page)
