My brother and his wife have become little amateur doomsday preppers. They used to joke about it a lot, but now they've actually started buying meals-ready-to-eat and making Crisco candles, etc.

I made a comment about not even wanting to survive in a post-apocalyptic world and they looked at me as if I was insane. I mentioned not wanting to fight for food or shelter, seeing and living in death every day, not wanting to have to fight off the ugly nature of some people in those situations, not wanting to live without things like music, books, films, electricity, my friends and loved ones, etc. They said there must be something wrong with me as my desire to live "isn't as it should be". They said they'd do anything to survive and want to make sure their children survive as well, even in an ugly world like that. Honestly, that makes no sense to me.

Now, I know an actual apocalypse would mean the end-all of everything, rendering the term "post-apocalyptic" a bit meaningless, but for theoretical purposes, let's say some could survive.

Would you want to survive?

If so, why? And would you, do you think?

If you don't want to live through it, why not?
