This question came up because with every woman I've dated, I subconsciously wanted her to like my family. I saw a great example in my own parents, like my dad where he financially supported his mother-in-law (my maternal grandmother) and put her kids (my maternal aunts and uncles) through college. When she passed away, he went out and planted a tree in her honor. I also saw my mother take care of my paternal grandfather during his last days after he was diagnosed with Stage IV lung cancer. My parents treated their in-laws the way they would treat their own parents, and my grandparents treated them like their own children.

On the other hand, stories of dealing with a "monster-in-law" are a dime a dozen. Personally, these scenarios don't even register with me because of the example I was given by my parents and grandparents.

My question is, how do you feel about your in-laws, or your significant other's parents or family? Do they treat you as well as one of their own? Do they hate you so much, the day your relationship ends, they will celebrate its end festively? How is your experience with your SO's family generally?

If you have a kid who is married or in a relationship, how do you feel about their SO?

In the poll, when I use "in-laws" I use it to refer to your SO's family, whether or not you're married.
