If I could say it on TV, I'm sure there's no problem saying it in front of my brother. He's 8 and I'm 20. Luckily I never got in trouble for it because he never told anyone.

I never usually say damn or hell in front of him and tend to always use the substitutes (dang {darn sounds a bit too formal} and heck). But I gave ass an exception, as if it were tamer than hell or damn.

I used it as an adjective. Jackass. Badass. Smartass. But I said great-ass. Our mom and his dad cursed in front of him too (even worse words than ass). He tells me he never cussed except one time.

He's not technically allowed to say crap, damn, hell, or get laid, but I did say screwed up and he corrected me to say "beeped up."

Is ass really a bad word for an 8yo? If so is it closer in obscenity to crap/piss or to the s/f word?

I was given an a-word pass at age 10. My stepdad and my mom are pretty liberal when it comes to cuss words, as long as my brother knows not to repeat it. Of course they don't want me saying any vulgar slang in front of him.

Now it's not like I called him an ass or said I will kick his ass, or worse yet, "lick" his ass.

He asked me if I said that on purpose or on accident. I told him I said it on purpose, but not that he should repeat it in school, but still how friends talk to each other.

I told him that sometimes swear words do have non-swear meanings. Ass meaning donkey. Of course he knows what hell means. Hell seems very G-rated in comparison, but too profane for me to say in front of him based on intention.

I personally think ass is far closer to crap than to the s-word. Both can be used on the local radio, local TV channels, even in commercials. The s-word isn't one of them, even though the parents do occasionally say it to my brother.
