Which is better, in your opinion?

I vote collectivist, because, well, doesn't individualism just sound like straight up selfishness? Everything is *me*, fuck society and everyone else if it inconveniences me in any way. For instance, my father, an avid, well, I don't want to draw political lines in the sand for this question, because that tends to set people off. I don't want this turning into a democracy versus communism debate--or, really, it wouldn't be a debate, even with the level headed people, since people have such strong feelings on these topics. So, please do not mention these things, nor democrats or republicans, conservatives or liberals. These are irrelevant to the purposes of this question.

Continuing, suffice it to say that my father is an avid individualist. He has told me countless times that even if we could provide food and housing to everyone, completely do away with homelessness and hunger, that he still would not agree to it, because it would 'raise taxes too high.' That's just... astounding to me. And, it's not like I don't know what money's worth; I work my ass off in the scorching Texas heat and freezing cold doing manual labor.

I just don't understand how someone could be *that* self-centered. And, that's my idea of individualism. Maybe I'm misrepresenting it, but I haven't really looked in to it all that much, yet.

As with all things, I think a balance is necessary, so one doesn't sacrifice all of him or herself entirely or to too great an extent. But, ultimately, I think collectivism is healthier for humans.

The only reason we survived this long was by sticking together. Well... when we weren't killing each other. But, really, wouldn't we be better off as a whole if everyone was healthy, well fed, housed and educated? Is it the needs of the few that matter or the needs of the many?

Really. Here's what I'm asking. What do you think is healthier for us? Individualism or collectivism?

I have a strong soul mate connection with a girl that I keep bumping into at parties & bars. Over the past 3 years I've hung out with her @ least a couple dozen times. I don't know her outside of these scenarios. So far, we've made out twice and had the really intense "if circumstances were different, we'd date" talk. On the other hand, she's also had the "I'm a horrible person for making out with you, just go spare yourself" talk with me(presumably because she was dating someone else @ that moment & I was drunk). Unfortunately, she's never been single when we bump into each other. She isn't now either. She's been with her current boyfriend for a few weeks.

A couple of weeks ago we both ended up having our birthday parties @ the same club at the same time. She pulled me away from my friends @ one point & we spoke briefly. During the conversation I slipped up and told her that I loved her. I don't know why the hell I said that, BUT she told me that she loved me too & kissed me. It felt like home. I don't remember what I said as we parted, but there was a long embrace. I went back to my friends & she went back to hers.

She told me to call her as I walked away, but I still haven't yet.



Fast forward to this past weekend. I bumped into one of her best friends at a party. He pulled me aside and told me to go for this girl. Essentially, break her and her current boyfriend up, saying that she'll be much happier & that it will work.

I don't want to be the one to break her & her boyfriend up. In my mind that should be on her. I plan on sticking around to see what she does. In the meantime, it feels wrong to hang out or call.
