Apparently, Senator McConnell failed to include in the trial rules normal restrictions on what lawyers are allowed to do during federal trials, or, apparently, any other restrictions on lying to the Senate. (Maybe that was the case with the Clinton trial rules, as well, but back then nobody would have stood for it, now we're desensitised.)

So, that's what Trump's lawyers are doing, starting with the one described in my poll from two months ago. Did you know that Republicans are present at the closed door impeachment inquiries, and get equal questioning time to the Democrats?

The transcripts of those depositions are public, now, and there were clearly many Republicans in attendance. At this point in a real trial, the judge would have declared a mistrial.
