My guy friend and I are both taken and we talk openly about our respective relationships. We had a fight last week and weren't speaking but we had an all day school event today together. He texted me last night to say he didn't need a ride from me and that was the most we'd talked in days.

Normally we are always staring at each other but since the fight we hadn't made eye contact. I looked at him today when I saw that he'd made granola for me, which he knows I love, so I knew that was his apology.

Then all day he was winking, smiling, staring, making faces and joking with me. We shared a bottle of water at lunch and started hashing out our problems. Later we were passing notes and he was bumping into me and teasing me about walking next to him. We were sitting pressed against each other, like before our current fight. He told me he ditched me after a previous fight because he thought I was too mad at him to want to see him so he was giving me a break from him, some space he said. I didn't understand until then. I thought he was just being a jerk.

Before we went home he was calling me sweetie and darling and assumed I was watching his stuff. Then I said we'd talk on the bus ride home. He teased me about assuming he'd sit with me but we did and he said we could cuddle and put his arm around me. Then we had a great talk and sorted all our stuff out. The sun was behind him so I could actually see his irises. They're deep brown. I told him this and he asked me what color his eyes are. I said so dark brown that you can barely see the pupils. He agreed and said his gf was dumb and didn't know what color they were. They've been together almost eighteen months.

What's going on here? What's he want with me?

Im getting some crazy mixed signals from a guy i really like and care for and possibly be falling in love with? maybe... dont know yet...

Anyway, we met earlier this year and we got along so well, I've never connected with a guy like that before. we were going to hang out again but some issues came up with him and his family so everything was postponed and still is.

We still talk all the time. I mean he has told me "theres no hiding that im attracted to you" and "your a really great girl and i do like you", but he has very recently started dating a girl and when he told me that, my heart just broke.

However, he has a girlfriend but continues to call me hun and darling.. which that is reasonable. but he still calls me beautiful?

Once the news came out to me that he was seeing this girl, he said he already told her about me. he said he wouldn't talk with someone as much as he does with me and not tell her.

I told him i was glad he had a girlfriend (because i was just trying to be polite. i hate that he's with someone else but im glad he's happy). when i said that, he responded with "Ur glad I have a girlfriend?" wouldn't he normally just accept the fact that i was happy for him?

He said the only reason he didn't go forward with dating me was because im still in high school. (he's 20 and im 17).

Back to my main question, since he has a girlfriend, wouldn't that stop him from calling me beautiful and stuff or being surprised that im happy for him?

Its just a huge ball of mixed signal messes. What do you think of the situation?

When you use them, is there a difference? And calling someone a pet name instead of their name?

I feel that "hun" and "babe" are a lot more common and don't really mean too much, but when someone uses something like "darling" or "sweetheart" or "my love" it makes me feel better a little sweeter lol :) And especially if they add "my" in front of it! Is there a difference though?

Most people would say a relationship should be 50/50. But some actually have one partner in charge.

In times past this would (legally) be the man. However, I somehow feel this is not the case when couples can choose. In my experience the guys tend to like dominant girls more than sweet darlings (that surely does not apply to everyone!).

So what do you think? What is more prevalent? A boyfriend/husband wearing the pants or a girlfriend/wife calling the shots? Do you think there are differences between girl-/boyfriend and wife/husband relationships in this respect? Or are you convinced every imbalance is unhealthy, even if both partners would like it?
