My mom doesn't believe in depression. She thinks that it's a choice or that we bring it on ourselves. She has no empathy. Instead, she hurts my feelings. I experience depression and sadness and she says things against how I feel or what is going on in my head and it really hurts me. Just now I was telling her how a lady had told me that depression is a disease but that I think it is something that someone can develop too because as a child I was happy but it wasn't until my mid-teens that it came. She had agreed with me which made me felt like she understood. She doesn't. She then said "Well, of course, it can be developed, when you were a kid you made the rules because your mom wasn't a mom, you were. When you came here it killed you that you had to listen to someone and then you went downhill and are "depressed"." I said to her "Mom that's not true, I take that very offensively." And then she was angry and mean to me. She told me to stop talking to her but then continued about how I think that I know everything and that I think I'm better than her and so on. It really was hurting me. I continued to be calm and hold my self together and try to squeeze in "That's not true", "Mom you don't know how I feel or think, you don't know what's up here" as I pointed to my head. And she kept on going with "Of course I don't because I don't know anything right? Because I was born yesterday right?" And getting angry and hurting me. She made me feel terrible and instead of hearing what I was saying, she was hearing what she assumes I'm thinking or what she "knows" about how I think or feel. She thinks that I'm like this solely because I'm sad that I have to listen to her and dad. That's not true at all. This does not make me feel better. How can I talk to someone who doesn't want to hear me? I can't. This just makes me sadder and feel less understood. I just want empathy, not sympathy. There are silent tears rolling right now.
