Humans are one of the only species whose fetuses have evolved to have invasive placentas, rendering us incapable of aborting them at will. Only great apes, some bats, and elephant shrews share this trait, and grow placentas which dig their way into the uterine wall and firmly attach themselves so that the mother can’t shed it readily, in the same manner that human placentas do. This is why human females menstruate, shedding the entire lining of the uterus, to rid ourselves of non-viable implanted embryos each month. But in practically all other placental mammal species, whenever conditions are adverse, the mother feels very stressed, or is simply physically or mentally incapable of coping with rearing young, she can either absorb the fetuses (effectively consuming them) or spontaneously abort them at will.

So then, in this hypothetical scenario, what if someone decided to tweak those genes to undo that evolutionary trait in humans, altering human biology so that human fetuses had non-invasive placentas instead, and thereby allowing all impregnated women to spontaneously abort their fetuses from now on, either by consciously willing it to happen or subconsciously if they're too physically, mentally or psychologically weak to cope. What would happen next? What kind of impact would it have upon society, civilization, and our future as a species, if all human women acquired the ability to do this? Would it lead to the dawn of a golden new age, or would it mean the extinction of all humanity?
