The other night we were at a Cleveland area casino. It was a busy night... it was Saturday and the Indians had a late afternoon game, so lots of people came over after that.
I was playing blackjack with four other people, I had the first seat to the dealer's left. During the hand in question,
I was dealt a pair of 8s,
the guy next to me had 15,
3rd position had 19,
4th had 14
5th spot had 16.
The dealer was showing a 6.
At this point I decided to split my 8s and was dealt a Queen and a 10, ending up with a pair of 18s (yay me, right? one would think). Everyone else around the table stood on their original hands. The dealer then goes four cards deep to draw a 17.
The guy next to me then starts spewing out all of this mansplaining nonsense about how I totally misplayed my hand and got lucky, but in turn I 'screwed' the rest of the table. He said that had I stayed on my original 16 like everyone else around the table, the whole table would have won.
It is my experience that splitting 8s against any dealer card 2-7 was common place in blackjack.
Thoughts on that scenario, and do you consider other players at the table when playing your hand?

I have this book I really want to read but it is starting off soooo sloooow. I have always read cover to cover.. never thinking to skip around. Do you skip around or is that a cardinal sin in your book... no pun intented. Lol
