A very close friend is going through a sex change surgery within the next 3 years, and I'm trying to help in any ways that I can to get them through this very emotional time. I'll probably be posting and asking lots of questions over the next year as they prepare.

My first question is about employment. To those of you whom have already gone through a full surgical change, did you find it easier to remain at the same job you had before, or had you made plans/arrangements beforehand to find new employment?

My friend is considering a career in a medical field, and this option is completely separate from their decisions on the sex change. There is concern about being accepted by co-workers, and they are wondering if one or the other should be postponed by a few years.

I'd like to hear about
-what you did chose to do, and how that worked out.
-what you would have done if you could have a do over
-or what you think you will do if you are considering a sex change yourself.
