Under capitalism my father's and mother's side of the family has finally gotten the chance to live in a comfortable home, travel, work wherever and whenever; hell, even buy toilet paper.

Under communism they were in queues for food, lacked consumer goods. Property was expropriated from "capitalists", priests were hung and churches destroyed, hundreds of thousands of families in a single year could have all of their possessions taken away and deported to literally the middle of nowhere, where many died in the cold or from a lack of food. The Soviet Union could only upkeep socialism by: 1) Expropriating personal property; 2) Slavery; 3) Trading with capitalist countries.

Only from what I know: two of my relatives died from starvation in a kolhoz (collective farm), one died in a camp (Gulag), and one escaped a camp and had to travel over 5000 miles/8000 kilometers all through Siberia while avoiding the police and NKVD. In addition, some relatives narrowly avoided internal exile after having their property seized while the wives and children of those sent to camps narrowly avoided the camps themselves (having to escape before the NKVD came to arrest them all). Later on my relatives who were doctors lost their jobs for being Jewish and they all avoided being deported to eastern Siberia due to Stalin's god sent death.

When I hear people saying that the state can be trusted to hold back, follow the law, control itself, be moral, I think of everything my relatives, among too many others, had to live through. Communism was mob rule which resulted in the elimination of the outliers and the people wanting to opt-out, after which the mob focused on itself and self-annihilated while the master sat on his throne, looking over his communist paradise.
