Ok, so I'm in love with my best friend.

Basically here's the situation-
We really like one another but can't be together because of religious differences. We've been sort of unofficially 'seeing each other' for quite a while now. Because we like oneanother we ended up hanging out all the time and even kissing, cuddling, etc. even though we knew it couldn't go anywhere. (I know most of you will immediately be thinking, 'This is a terrible and stupid, you're both gonna get hurt!' And trust me, we know, but it's just the situation we kind of fell into)

I know I love him, and really want to say it, but I have a dilemma.
We know our relationship won't ever go anywhere, we've already gone too far. By saying the three words I could just be leading him and myself on even more, setting us up for yet worse heartbreak.
Here's the other thing though, I'm a firm believer that if you love someone, you should let them know. One day something may happen, and you'll never be able to tell them, and you'll regret that forever. Love is a wonderful and pure thing, it's amazing to know someone feels it for you. Also, although I'm in love with him, that doesn't mean I don't still love him as a friend also. Even in the future when we've both moved on, I'll still love him and want to be close to him.

I'm curious to see what other people will make of this situation, so, feel free to vote and leave your thoughts.

NOTE- I know a lot of you are gonna be yelling at your computer that this is bound to end badly, and we should end it before we get hurt. A lot of you will also be thinking that we shouldn't let our differences get in the way and should be together anyway. But this question is only about what the title asks, I'm not looking for advice about our friendship in general, just whether the L word is a good idea.
