I'm in my early 20's, and I'm a social drinker. On occassion (depending on how much I have eaten, the atmosphere etc) I drink in excess. I'll drink until I'm a mess and the next day wake up not remembering what happened. Sometimes it's funny, and other times it's not. Funny meaning typical drunk, slurring and eating a lot, falling over but laughing at everything, and dancing ridiculously. Not so funny meaning crying, getting angry, saying mean things to my girlfriend, yelling, puking, etc.

This past weekend I was in another city with friends I haven't seen in a while, celebrating Pride weekend, and things got out of hand (and by things I mean tequila). This was one of those other times, those not funny times.

My girlfriend said I was a mess, getting upset at someone who insulted my hair and mimicking them to strangers, and I kept running away from my girlfriend. At one point she tried to grab me so we could go home and I apparently pushed her, and then I fell into the bar and knocked over the chairs. Humilating and disguting for sure. That day I had only ate a hot dog and nothing else.. my messiest nights are dependent on my food intake.

Since then we have talked, and because of her alcoholic family/relationships in the past, she's not comfortable with me drinking. She never has been but the multiple times in the past 2 years that it's gotten out of control have scared her, and makes her not trust me.

She wants me to make a decision, choose to drink or choose her, however, not in a controlling manner. She wants me to have fun in my life, and if I can't choose a life without drinking with my friends, then we shouldn't be together but she won't judge me or be upset, because she understands because she is also young. She supports whatever I decide.

Obvious choice is girlfriend over booze, but is it realistic? What would you do?
