What are your thoughts on Djs?

Well for the most part, I can't stand them, the self-glorified ones that is. In today's day and age, anyone with a laptop, a music library, and serrato/trackor dj can become a dj. In fact, technology in this field has progressed so much so to the point that the software can scan your library, detect bpms and match them to a set bpm, and I wouldn't be surprised now if they were able to detect key signatures so as to facilitate better song choices. I mean don't get me wrong, I appreciate the invaluable service they provide of keeping the music flowing, and keeping the party going, but is it necessary to have your own photographer taking photos of you while doing the stereotypical dj "one hand on the turn table other hand helping your shoulder hold up the one headphone" pose? Is it necessary to come up with a stage name like dj (insert cool word here), considering you're just playing OTHER people's tracks? And often times I see all these djs turning all these knobs as if it's actually doing anything (except for the occasional filter, which by the way, is just about the ONLY modification these djs do to tracks) when in reality, we know the song, and we know that's how it normally sounds. I mean I don't mean to be a hater, but I personally know first hand the tedious work of putting together a track, from conception to finished product and trust me, it ain't no walk in the park. Any true producer can tell you just how many hours have been spent on ONE song, especially if you synthesize your own synths which requires your to have rudimentary knowledge on additive/subtractive/granular synthesis. You also have to basic understanding of theory, arrangement, and mixing and mastering. And for some jerk off to come along and just play your track as if he's the one who wrote it and call it part of HIS/HER "set", well, to be honest with you, it kinda pisses me off.

Some of you non-musicians may not understand, but to put it into perspective, imagine the visual/literary metaphor of this situation. What would you think if someone cut out pictures of graffiti tags, made a collage, and called it his art? Or what if someone read some of the greatest books in history, cut out all of the greatest lines, and put it in a book that he called HIS work and paraded around like some top notch author? Would it be considered art? Would they be considered artists? Well, some might say yes, and to an extent I unfortunately have to considered it art as well, but not NEARLY to the extent that the original work. To me, it raises the question, at what point do we call something plagiarism? I can't stand all this sampling going on nowadays. It's like come on people, write something original, or at least try!s

And this brings up another point, I've had arguments with music theorists and they all tell me the same ol spiel, all the intervals have already all been discovered and thus all the chords blah blah blah blah. DUDE….IT'S A MATHEMATICAL IMPOSSIBILITY
