We see this often, a black youth is killed by police. There are two broad groups in reaction to this.

Those who generally stay quiet are in one group. They would say the whole story is different from what the media says. They are the people who would say, "Back the Badge" or "Blue Lives Matter", and are generally of that opinion based on crime statistics done by blacks is disproportionately higher given that they are 13% of the population, or that police brutality leading to deaths exists for other races too but the media doesn't show it.

Then there is the other side of people who say "Black Lives Matter", and are generally of the opinion that there is apathy and racism towards blacks. As we saw in the recent case of the white woman walking a dog - who said "an African American man is threatening me" - weaponizing his race against him. This group also feels that when a black youth is shot, people just talk about it, have apathy and don't bother much.

So to ask these relevant questions:
1. Is there anything black youths do that makes them more prone to this type of treatment? Or is this general police brutality which is hyped when black are killed?
2. Is this assertion fair in light of the deaths of men like George Floyd and Eric Garner given that we have the videos?

In light of the lastest black person gunned down by a non black person, and ensuing social disruption from the incident, I'll ask. Should all/most black people (or anyone for that matter) be trained in how to respond to confrontation to avoid these situations?

What the training consists of would be another matter. I've seen people "de-escalate" tense situations and was impressed... and that would be the key to handling these matters. Dealing with pissed off A$$holes (justified or not) is not easy for anyone, no matter the culture. We all have to deal with them at times. It is tougher emotionally when it is white confronting black because of the reality and perceptions of the past. The other aspect is knowing your rights, being confident in your sense of security and legal defense, rights, etc. etc..

This might seem extreme, but lots of kids go to martial arts class, lots of kids learn self defense. Black kids... given all the media focus on incidents, likely don't see a good option. They should know defense... verbal, physical, legal, and have confidence to do so.

I am not suggesting everyone be armed nor that the public pay for it. Words are more powerful than swords.

I was confronted when young more than once. I wish I had training.
