If I were to date a guy with an immaturity of a six year old yet who is serious about life, rarely shows his feelings, can be funny and works hard, can it work?

I've had a friend who's been hot/cold toward me. I've noticed that I hear from him when he's bored/wants something. I still hear from him on a semi regular basis, which is at least once a week.

I have noticed that communication picks up quite a bit right before he wants to hang out/do something. We hang out, all is cool. Then his communication becomes kinda sporadic and drops back to barely once a week. It's been going on for quite awhile because I've generally been whatever about it, but am growing tired of the situation. I've kept myself emotionally distant, which is why it's been going on for so long. I don't mind hanging out and keeping in touch, but with this trend that's going on, I just feel kinda used and like I'm one of many options of his- I'm a placeholder while he openly dates/finds other friends who take up his time.

Another tidbit is that he makes excuses/has reasons why he can't hang out sometimes, some of which I'm okay with. But then I see him ditching those reasons/excuses to hang out with others. Say, if his finances are strapped, he's holding off on hanging out. Fine, okay. But then I see that all go out the window when it comes to some other people. It seems as if everything is on his own terms and the like.

I'm not sure if it's even worth talking to him about since the last time I talked to him about an issue, I got the run around, and his immaturity was unbelievable as he wouldn't take much responsibility for his actions. I'm not sure if I should talk it out, which is my usual approach to dealing with situations like this, or just to walk away, as I'm not sure talking it out is going to do anything.
