So I'm not sure if any of you have thought about a ring to symbolize that you are dating someone.

I was talking with a group of people, and the women were saying how great it would be if there was a "dating ring."



In my mind it seems really impractical; but, part of me can also see the value in the idea.

I'm a single guy, and it's hard trying to figure out whether or not a girl/woman that I like is single or just dating. With a ring, I'd quickly know from the start where she stands at least on that issue.

Part of me, however, feel that logically, it would be really impractical.

A) Most people have 4 fingers and a thumb on each hand. I can already see an issue with too many dating options and too few fingers.

1) You're single and looking.

2) You're single and NOT looking.

3)You're dating, but not serious

4) You're going "steady"

5) You're getting engaged (already handled with the engagement ring)

6) You're married. (already handled with a wedding ring)

7) For those of you who believe in an "open" marriage or "swinging" we need a seventh option.

8) You're separated.

9) You're divorced

10) You're divorced and not looking.

11) You're divorced and looking

12) You're widowed.

Ok, now even if we combine those for less detail (single and NOT looking verses single and looking would be under one thing -single-, for example), I see at least 6 options for showing your availability.

Now would we come up with a directional ring, as the Irish have the Claddagh ring? (For example, say you just started dating your SO a week ago, so now you can wear your ring differently), and then add to that the finger on which the ring is worn means something as well?

B) Who would decide which ring on which finger means a certain type of relationship?

C) What's to keep a person from lying? Say, what's to keep the cheater from cheating, or the single guy/girl who wants to be flirted with so that he/she makes people think they're married to get more action?

D) would we add "details" like sexual orientation?

So which of you thinks it's a good idea to have society come up with a relationship status ring system? '
