Search Results: changing positions

I ask because I'm applying for a cashier position at some retro movie, music, and video game store a few blocks from my house and it's asking me for 3 references. The problem is, I've been trying to get in contact with some of my past co-workers but some changed their numbers while the rest never bothered texting me back so I have no one else to use but one of my community college professors, a friend (with a lot of work experience), and my boxing coach/trainer as my references.

I've been told mixed things about doing such things for my references pages in a job application. On one hand, I've been told that it's a bad idea either to use the people I mentioned as my references or lie about one of my "volunteer" or work experience with one of these references as companies these days can use the internet to do a lot of research about these references and even my work history. On the other hand, I've also been told that people exaggerate about the whole work reference issue with employers making a big deal about them and that the only time they'll really look deep into my work references is if I'm applying for a job position that involves a lot of responsibilities, and that requires skills or college education and my in case with the cashier position, I shouldn't worry so much about my work references.
