In relationships sometimes some people will use romance as a leverage. Well, I picked up on that early, so there have been times when I would have it made up in my mind that I would not display any form of romantic gestures to either get my point across, take a stand, or out of immature spite. Has anybody else done this?

In the argument over gay marriage a lot of people opposed it by claiming that marriage has been traditionally between a man and a woman. Traditionally marriage involved a lot of things such as love, romance, passion, sex etc... However, those aren't things you can really legislate because in a free society you don't dictate people's personal lives. Instead of looking at what marriage has been traditionally we should instead look at what it is legally. And legally speaking it is simply a financial contract between two individuals stating that they will jointly share their property and income. And guess what, people do get married for purely financial reasons all the time and sometimes both parties have relationships with people outside their marriage and both partners are aware and OK with it because the marriage had nothing to do with romance in the first place. Traditionalists may think that's wrong but like I said, this is a free society. So, from that perspective, it doesn't make any more sense to call a same sex marriage "homosexual" or a different sex marriage "heterosexual" any more than it would make calling any kind of financial contract homo or heterosexual because of the genders of the co-signers of said contract. And as such, if you're going to deny two individuals the right to enter into a financial contract with one another because of what genders they are; whether it'd be because both are male or both female OR because they are of the same or different genders, (no matter how you feel about homosexuality) you're violating their civil rights, that's all there is to.

Basically it's divorcing the same sex marriage debate from homosexuality.
