I've encountered different viewpoints. When I ask my guy friends, do they want women to approach them, they all say things like: "hell yeah" with a sn*****. But whenever I do it in practice, the men are shocked and tell me things like: "I would never expect a girl to start talking to me." They didn't seem to look happy/relieved either.

I'm, well, put it this way - definitely not a bad looking girl, so it's not like they were repulsed by me physically. They just seemed to be taken aback in a bad way that a girl would be so blunt as to talk to them.

I started two conversations on the train - one guy was speaking in Italian on the phone, and I told him I'd just gotten back from Italy and liked it there, he was actually Italian-English, so he could understand me perfectly, but still looked at me like I was crazy. So, I said: "I say that because I just heard you speaking Italian." And he said, in an almost scared/frustrated tone: "Yes, I'm half Italian."

Another time, I overheard a guy talking to his male friend (he clearly was single) in a pub and a while later started talking to him and he said: "Wow, where I'm from, women would never just start talking to a man like that." He didn't ask me for my number or anything like that either.

Whenever men approach me, the first encounter runs relatively smoothly, but the 4 or 5 times I tried to with them, didn't work out at all.

After these experiences, it put me off.

But I was sitting in the library today. Least place I thought to meet someone. This guy was sitting next to me. I didn't look at him closely, but he seemed kinda hot. Out the corner of my eye, I swear I saw him glance at me a couple of times.

But then he answered his phone and had this delicious Irish accent, he was on the phone for about 5 min and from what I got from his conversation he seemed a really nice guy. He was almost whispering because he said on the phone that he didn't want to upset anyone at the library. He seemed a pretty fun and upbeat guy.

I went out for lunch, came back and he was still there and sat in the same spot.

I didn't want to make the same mistake of coming on too strong, but I also didn't have the nerve to stare at him, so I just stayed in the area, thumbed through a few books that I wouldn't have bothered with otherwise and hoped he'd start talking to me... he still didn't say anything an hour later so then I decided it was time to leave and left.

He could have been gay. He could have had a girlfriend. But I was so mad at myself as I walked to my car that I didn't take the plunge and say hi. He seemed so nice with his cute Irish accent. I'm a really nice girl and I find it difficult, as in almost impossible, to find genuinely nice, non-neanderthol men. Now I am kicking myself over this.

One of my friends got some pictures taken recently and, well, they're hot. She looks great in them...but then she put them on Facebook. It's her in a just a guys button down and then in lingerie with her legs open and, well, the pictures look like they belong in playboy or something. She's not ugly or anything she's really pretty and she has a great body but these are the kind of pictures I'd give my boyfriend, not the kind I'd put on Facebook if for no other reason I'd be scared an employer would see them. If I had pictures like that I wouldn't put them on Facebook just because I'd be mortified if my boss ever saw them. Do guys like seeing pictures like that on Facebook? Would you want to date a girl that had pictures like that on Facebook? Like I said this girl is my friend and I know she's not a slut or anything but in those pictures, well, if I didn't know her I wouldn't think a whole lot of good things about her.
