Search Results: hard time communicating

We were best friends for 2 years almost 7 years ago but grew apart a bit. We'd had 2 major issues that were mostly due to him being an asshole and then both times he chose to end the friendship, supposedly because he knew he wasn't a good friend to me. About a year and a half ago, we ran into each other and became really good friends again. It'd been great but the same thing happend 7 months ago though. We had an issue that might have been miscommunicated about but it became much more serious because it just kind of stemmed from the 2 previous issues we had that weren't really resolved because he refused to communicate. It became the last straw for me because he, again, refused to communicate so I wasn't really even sure what his issue was. He texted me saying happy birthday and I don't know whether to respond or not. I really don't want to go through the same thing again and I'm sure that's what it will eventually end up happening, but then I think maybe we didn't have a fair chance the most recent time because one of us possibly misunderstood and maybe his feelings were hurt and that's why he wouldn't talk? It's really hurtful to me each time because I feel like I try so hard to make things good and it doesn't seem like he cares at all so I don't know. I thought we'd be able to get along better once we were older and more mature but I feel like maybe we just aren't meant to be friends. What do you think?
